Title: Damned House insurance cover
Post by: Varche on 10 November 2008, 15:11:28
So a few weeks back we had terrific rain, the likes of which I have never seen before in Europe.

No damage to the house but the flooding wrecked the housing of a pump and other equipment installed professionally 4 years ago.

called the insurance company and they sent a man out who took loads of photos and said yes it will be covered. They would sort it all out. My estimate about £1000 perhaps more with labour.

Received a letter today saying "not covered as the rainfall was not more than 40 litres a sq m per hour."  The storm was very localised as there was no wind. Next day I talked to someone local who said we had had 100 litres in total per sq m. In the local town they had hardly anything!

I am not going to give up without a fight but how can they prove we didn't and more to the point how can I prove we did!! I am going to see an official to get them to write me a letter.

Bl$$dy insurance companies same the world over. ::)

Well, you have someone who will vouch for the level of rain. The insurance company presumably didn't install a rain gauge at the risk address at the start of the policy.. ::)

They will try anything to get out of a claim. Only defence is persistence and poor publicity. They'll soon realise, if you don't bend over and take it, that it'll cost them more to fight you than to pay out.

They are all the same,  masters of the small print.

I priced insurance a while back and got told that they wont pay out if you under insure, so I said well what if I up the cover.  Thats illegal Sir, you cannot over insure it's classed as fraud.

No matter how we do they have the options not to pay out.

A friend of mine bought a 750 Suzuki without a MOT. He told the insurance company that it would not be used on the road until he sorted it out.....but he paid a premium to insure it against theft only...which the insurance company agreed to.

You can guess the rest....it was stolen from his locked garage 6 months later....(into the back of a van presumably as it did not run)

Insurance company would not pay up as they said it did not have a MOT so was not roadworthy.

He took them to court and won.....a happy ending. :y :y :y

A guy on a kit car forum I frequent phoned up to tell his insurance that he'd be out of the country for a couple of months on business. Insurance company said he'd have to cancel the policy as he's not resident in the UK oh, and he won't get a refund because they don't refund cancelled policies.

That's the thanks you get for being honest. >:(

I Like Kevin's proposition. "They didn't put a rain gauge at the risk address so how do they know"  ;D ;D

I have had a read through the policy. page 1 everything is covered 100% Page 2 to 50 are all the exclusions.

Have concluded we might as well not bother and save £350 a year as any other claims will not be covered either.

maybe I could send the guy a photo of a 25 foot long and road width section of 7 inch thick reinforced road that got washed 100 feet away down the hill!! ;D

Contact your insurers and inform them that you intend to make a complaint to the Insurance Ombudsman about how they are handling your claim and also that you are going to contact the Financial Services Authority regarding the miss-selling of your Policy. They won't like the threat of the FSA because all Insurance companies fear any potential withdrawal of FSA registration....
