Ask the seller what the date of first registration was, if it's 1st March 2001 or after it's the higher tax band.

car must be no later than X reg to qualify for lower tax

3.2 will definately be Y reg or newer, and tax will go up to £455 a year when renewed from march 2010

my mate has just bought a golf R32 and i get the feeling he hasn't checked out tax costs, that's also £455 a year!

Just bought a 2001 X reg 3.0 elite on the strength of this, but its not absolutely nailed on yet that VED will increase to initially £300odd in 2009, then £400odd in 2010 for the highest band of pre 2006 reg cars. There is opposition on the increase in VED to help the ailing motor manufacturers, poor dears !

This was a big factor for me when picking up my Omega recently too - had to be X-reg at latest....ended up with a Sept 2000 W, so that is fine :)

My other car is a Seat Toledo 1.8T on a 53, so that is already going to be scary tax :(

The Telegraph online suggested last night that the £400+ tax band that was due to come in to effect from next year may be delayed .........as part of the tax cuts that are apparently needed to kickstart the economy.....  :y :y :y So we may all be saved.

Its not concrete yet, but there is a good chance. :y :y :y
