Title: Poxy Car
Post by: Johnboy0811 on 12 November 2008, 18:45:10
Just been told by a breakdown man that my alternator is knackered.
Thought maybe I could change it myself so rang the local parts place to find they are closed (supposed to be open till 8 "NOT TONIGHT!)

Second line of enquiry led me to phoneing Halfords who said they can supply one through another company I just have to take the other one in exchange. Price quoted was £136.75  >:( Lets say its dearer than what I thought it would be.

Can anyone suggest anywhere to get one from at a cheaper price or is this about right for a cdx 25 v6 on a R plate.

 :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

All advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

John :y

Have a look in the Parts for sale section .. see who is breaking what and drop them a PM -- always worth a shot !

Or fix it yourself. Marks DTM did a good guide. Here:

BTW I had an Audi A6 a few years back. The best price I could get for an alternator from motor factors was... £440! OMG  :o :o So I chopped it in. :y

Just replace the brushes on the alternator.

I priced one up on Monday for one of my Transit vans over here in Ireland, 300 euro or £252 . :'(
I've just bought a new one from E bay for £110 delivered . ;D
Where do they pull the prices from ?

Funny you should say this, but I was out jumpstarting my son-in-laws car (why don't they phone the AA, not me  :'( ) and I noticed that the volts across my battery was 12.95V constantly, a bit low ?. I suspect my alternator has seen better days so I could be looking for a replacement or spares fairly soon. I thought we could get the rectifier pack, brushes or regulator easily/cheaply ?.

Have you looked in the maintenance section, at http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1153772945 ?
it might be helpful, you might be able to save a few (lots  :y ) of bob fixing it yourself. If mine is faulty thats where I will start.

I have found a Vauxhall specilist in Plymouth who are doing the job today. Supply a secondhand alternator and fit it for £140.  :)
