What is the difference, big price difference. Daughter wanted an I pod, she is only 8 and I think they are expensive, swmbo has seen an MP4 on the Aldi site and still seems to play video, pictures etc.
-
Ipod - you pay for the marketing and the name - plenty of better PMPs around
-
You will pay a premium for the gayPod. But crap mpeg4 players are that - crap.
-
But then if its a style thing, she'd want the gayPod over and above anything superior...

It's a style and image thing, so you just wouldnt understand as you are tooooo old. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

She is only 8 and confident enough not to worry about image, but I see what you are saying. :)
Yes she has the benefit of mature parents, that is why she is so confident and able............... :P :P :P

the archos machines are very good , i think anyway .

In my experience ipods are good for just over a year, then start to go wrong.Built in obselesence ? :-/

If she is 8 you will find an iPod will be broken very soon.
The sansa PMPs are vey good, easy to use, cheaper, you can add SD cards to boost the memory and they look ok too :y

I'm with Gaffers. I have iPods and like them a lot, but I find that Sansa make very good players for gifts to people that do not have iPods already.
If you are going to be managing her music files for her though then you are not going to be happy whatever you get! :P

My 10 year old daughter has an iPod Nano which we bought for her last Christmas, never gone wrong but for some reason she now wants the 'new' shape. She was adamant she had to have an iPod until she saw my new 32Gb Creative Zen player. Now she wants one of those, luckily she doesn't know the difference between an 8Gb and the 32Gb so she'll be getting one of those for Christmas instead.
Having used the Creative for about 4 weeks now I have to say I'm very pleased with it and find it incredibly easy to use. Can't really see the point in having 32Gb though, with that much music and video it would be really hard to find anything.

Going to sound a silly question, but been doing some looking today.
Is I Pod just a make or is it a piece of equipment made by several companies. :-[
Just want something that she can put some pictures / video on and play some music and saw some things in Asda for about £50.00

Ipod is an Apple branded mp3 player of rather average performance, bought because it is an ipod not because it is any good.
There are quite a few decent mp3 players - much better than Apple
-
I've recently bought one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001C9RY34/400001938-21/?m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
Except I've got the 16Gb one. Excellent piece of kit. Very nice audio quality and superb battery life. Bought it as an MP3 player primarily but a colleague dumped a movie onto it while I was on a business trip and it brightened up the flight home. Not 100% sure if it would meet the requirements of an 8 year old but worth a look.

We're talking about MP3 players, not the Hubble space telescope! Yes, others can be as good or better, but iPods are good, the service is good, and you know what you are getting. There's a reason that they are the market leaders. If you want to do endless research and you are very finicky then an iPod is not for you. If you want to walk into a store and walk back out with a nifty MP3 player then you will probably buy an iPod.

Not at the price they are, my daughter is only 8 and will want more that one small parcel off Santa. Only research was in Asda today and she sotted an mp3 player in pink that she liked. After all she has a phone and that can be used to play music, the novelty will wear off quickly. :)
