Title: Game Wars question....
Post by: hotel21 on 14 November 2008, 18:36:18
Think its been asked before (cant be arsed looking, to be honest....  :-[ )but what are the merits/demerits of Xbox360 versus PS3??

If looking for shoot-em-ups as the major gaming experience, whats the better??

PS3 is a brilliant piece of kit.

Great games machine
Good media player
Very good BLu Ray player
Pretty good upscaling DVD player

BRs on our new TV are jaw droppingly briliant

There a few exclusive games, Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo series, Motorstorm series off hte top of my head

I have to say that I have been looking into consoles recently....

Of the two, the PS3 is better than the Xbox 360....the graphics are a different league!

Will probably end up with a Wii though for erindoors

Ive got all 3......well we have all 3 due to having a 12 year old  :-/.

Dont get much time to use them, I love the concept of the Wii but usually end up with the PS3 and Grand Turismo Prologue or Resistance Fall of Man...

xbox over ps3 anyday.

PS3 controllers are extremely poor, no rumble, which is very important first person shooters / drivers games. PS3 controllers hurts your hands after about 3 hours or so. xbox ones are much nice to use.

Graphics wise? There is nothing in it, they are much the same. PS3 is slightly more powerful.

Now before Mr MarkDTM goes all techy on me and Martin saying how much better the PS3 is WAIT.....

These games are developed, and then shipped on multiple mediums (PC/Xbox/PS3) there is no difference in the detail/graphics shipped on each medium, its the same data just burn on different discs in slighly different formats.

Yes the PS3 is slightly better and more powerful, but because xbox has the bigger market share, games are designed for xbox, and adopted for ps3 you have the same data on both, just a different disc!

Only PS3 unique games will be better graphics wise, of that the only decent one is GT5.

The ps3 is just not worth the extra money!

We also have a Wii but thats a different type of console.

COD4 is one of the best games for the xbox, along with GTA 4.

Don't get my wrong the PS3 graphics are better, BUT only if they are developed ONLY for the PS3 like GT5

But the developer companies such as EA Games, unless sponsored by Sony will develop games for both consoles, having to cater for the less powerful xbox.

So there really is no need for the PS3, it was only useful as a blueray player really.

And a media center is probably better than a gayStation for that anyway...

True.

The Sony interface is not that great either, and is limiting as a media centre. Its only good to actually play standard bluray movies.

xbox live is much better as well, ps3 community is small.

xbox still outsells PS3!

PS3 controllers are fine - a few months ago - before my accident I played games for at least 45m a night for 2 months.

No hand ache at all

Also PS3 has HDMI - best way to connect to HDTV

Doesn't have Gran Turismo though and neither does it have Little Big Planet - anyway I'm off to play Motorstorm Pacific Rift :y

As to long game marathons - not into that anyway - 2 hours is enough for me

I'll give you that, Gran Turismo is the only game i would like, but its THE only game!

Little Big Planet sucks! - It will also flop

Targeted as the most popular game of all time, its heading for a big fall. In less than 6 months it will be dead.

A product like that won't work, they are already limiting themselves to less than 30% of the market.

edit - which is the best noisy shooty gun game to piss off the neighbours with then??   ;D

What I would recommend is going and seeing friends who have consoles, and get a feel for them yourself.  People will, by nature, recommend that they bought and state everything else is rubbish.

I'm too old for gaming, but I know most of the kids of the people at work have xboxes, not many have ps3.  Whether thats a cost thing, or fact xbox has been around longer, or purely because xbox live is better than anything else, I don't know...

One of my nephews has psone, ps/2, psp etc, but wants an xbox, not ps/3.  Another who has psone and ps/2, but wants ps/3 (but then his dad is nearly as pro sony as Martin Imber, and won't consider anything else).

I would let you borrow my xbox for a couple of weeks - and I have a few driving and shooter type games - but I lent it to a colleague, and can't get it back off him how ;D

I wouldn't class the Wii as proper gaming - its a fun console that you can pick up for 20mins after a night out, and have a laugh.  Defo not the same as xbox/gayStation type games, which are universally unsocialable...

Got to be Call of Duty 4 or 5 m8. On a PS3. When you get bored of shooting people, you can stick a blueray film on & piss the neighbours off even more
For sheer kick ass graphics, COD 4 is amazing. The cinematic section when the nuclear bomb takes out half the gulf states left me knackered, and when the character finally passed away it ruined my night :-[

Some body please back me up on this, or I'm starting to look a right sad sack ;D

Games i can recommend to you H21 would be- Gears of War 1 & 2. Dark Sector & Dead Space, all these will keep the neighbours awake whilst you're awake (if you so wish) For a bit sneeking around with silencers attached I would say- Call of Duty 4 & Rainbow Six Vegas 2.
Completed all of these & they're FF :y :y :y :y :y

Duke Nukem is one of my all time favorite games!

I used to be a PC gamer, hated consoles, but the constant need to upgrade the PC and getting games to work was a pain.

For cheap, good fun shooting people, best combination is a xbox and Call of Duty 4  :y

Its the best all around package (price/controllers/games available/online community)

Don't think they are, as XBOX360 compatibility with original XBOS games is not brilliant, and gayStation's compatibility with PS/2 was removed.

Even on the early consoles, those games always seemed better in PC format...

i have both, in theory the have it all, cake and eat answer is the ps3. The complication is 360 is better for gameing, just, imho. Depends what you will realisticaly use it for. For me you may as well have blu ray as well. Forza 2 for me though is the business, you can hear via 5.1 surround, wind, transmission, induction, road and exhaust noise, with echo off the hill sides on the ring. Really sets the seen and makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Not got far enough on prologue to see that emulated  yet, tbh, dont think its as good as forza 2 which is 360 only. Dont see where media centre comes into it so far, last time i looked at it they wanted over a grand and with the demise of HD discs, no hd option? Presumeably things have moved on some what, i havent looked at m centre for ages tbh.

Microsoft Media Center, not the media functionality built in.  It means I can schedule and watch any recorded programs (recorded on the MCE PC under telly) anywhere in house where xbox is, using the MCE interface.  Likewise, I can view pictures, listen to music, watch xvids -  all stored (or accessible) on MCE, watched/listened wherever the xbox happens to be.  For hi-def, wifi not enough, needs to be wired though.

For me the 360 is much to unreliable.....far to mnay motherboard and DVD failures!

I was looking at the Wii at the weekend.....and its over priced. If it was 50 quid less it would be owrth it but, its only 80 quid cheaper than a PS3!
Title: Re: Game Wars question....
Post by: Allenm on 17 November 2008, 08:44:00
My 2p's worth!

We have all 3 under the telly (Wii, Xbox360, PS3).

Wii - Great for pick-up and play fun - not much else.
Xbox360- Great games and graphics etc amazing - BUT the noise of the damn thing is unreal - when you turn it off its like having a headache suddenly disappear - Also the much rated online community (xboxlive) costs you £40 a year - you can't play onlines games unless you subscribe to it!
PS3 - looks good, quiet, stunning graphics - as good games as the xbox, built-in Blu-Ray, wireless controllers have built-in batteries that recharge from the cable - (Xbox needs batteries every week or so).

The decision though, really hinges on a game you are after - if it is one of the ones where you want vast online multi-player capacity - then buy an xbox360, subscribe to Xboxlive and go for it.  For anything else, get a PS3.

I'm not a big Xbox (or gayStation) fan, but listening to the kids at work, it would appear that the current crop of xboxes are much more reliable from the solder issue.

Apparently, a lot of the dvd issues are related to *cough cough* 'modifications ;D

I'm not a gamer, so make no comments, other than agree the xbox does suffer with noise, esp after playing heavy games for a couple of hours.

gayStation has the advantage of being quieter, and bluray (though if your wanted bluray, probably be tempted to get a proper player).

The advantage I have, with a fairly powerful PC under the telly (MCE), is I can play games without yet more junk under TV.  Grand Prix 4 is pretty impressive on a 40" ;D

The Wii, without doubt, gets far more gaming use than the xbox (which is really only used as MCE extender), as it is far more socialable than xbox/gayStation gaming.  I agree, its a very simple console, and on that basis, overpriced.  However, the amount of fun that Mrs TheBoy and I, and our friends when they come round, have had has made it value for money in my book.  In the 3yrs I've known you, I've never had you down as the unsocialable type ;)

It boils down to the type of games you want to play though :)

never had any problems with mine, had it over a year now. I do have the later one with a HDMI port, updated heat sink and better cooling.

They are noisey, but the type of games i play, you can't hear it!
