Post by: Richie London on 18 November 2008, 09:33:26
m8 is working in a sheltered housing flat, woman who was found dead was in her 80's. while decorating the flat for the local authority he dropped the rad in the bedroom and found 4 envelopes. total contents is £2765
the flat has been empty for over 3 months so wont be missed.

This is one of those tricky situations... I'd like to think I'd hand it in, as I have in the past when finding things in the street, but it's a lot of money and until I was in the same situation I don't know for certain. Might get a reward if he does though! :-/ :-/

No idea what I would do - if there were family - no question, if not - I think an RNLI charity box would get filled up.

I'm not normally one to take a moral stance on other people's behaviour, but to keep this money would be no different from stealing it from under the person's nose, and I couldn't live with the shame of doing that.
Reasoning that it might go to someone undeserving is the worst possible excuse, because it puts you in exactly the same category as such people.
I only hope that that comment was not thought out too carefully.

Family - hand it in, if no family and no one to inherit it - charity rather than let the government get their dirty hands on it

I would keep it,
I did the honest thing once when I found a purse in the middle of the road with credit cards, £200+ cash, Driving License etc tried to phone but the she was ex-dirctory so I drove 20 miles to the address which was in the middle of nowhere, had to ask for directions, so after one hour I finally got there, and as I drove up the long drive to get to the house which is in the middle of a large field in the countryside I could see the woman & her friend sitting in the front garden, as I parked next to the house the woman didn't even get of her chair to see who I was I walked over to her and asked if she was the person named on the driving license as the photo on it was a few years old she said "Yes" I explained that I had found it and that it had taken me just over an hour to find her house to return it and she took the purse of me and carried on drinking wine and talking to her friend >:(

I wasn't looking for a big thank you for my trouble but a bit of gratitude would have helped

That's just rude! I dropped my photocard licence in a supermarket a couple of years back. Got a nice letter from someone who picked it up and posted it to me. I wrote back to thank them as manners are free and it's not like stamps cost much! ::)

I'm not a dishonest person, but if there was no family or rightful benefactor, I'd be inclined to keep it. If you handed it in you don't know where it would end up. :-/

My wife was in London last year and was outside a posh hotel waiting with her friends when she saw an envelope on the pavement. She opened it and inside were a number of other envelopes which said, DJ, Cake, Catering, ect. My wife said there was thousands of pounds in there and I was obviously to pay for a wedding, so see went to the hotel reception and asked if there was a wedding going on and was told yes so she handed the money over and gave her details. I told her she was stupid, how does she know that money went any further. I said she should have handed it in to the nearest Police station.

Another little tale, A collegue of my wife's lost his mobile last week, so he called the number to see if anyone had it, to his suprise the phone was answered and he arranged to meet the person in his works reception. When he meet the person, it turned out to be a tramp and the tight arse gave him £2 for his bother only after the tramp asked. The phone had £30 worth of credit on it and then there was the cost of a new phone. Is it any wonder that people don't hand things in? >:(

I am an honest person too - but who do you hand it in to?

Who is to say they aren't just going to pocket it anyway?

It might be wrong, but I wouldn't even trust the police to do the "right" thing with it - what ever that is?  :-[

Best bet is to put it in your pocket and put somewhere safe for a few months - see if anyone asks for it.

When you hand it over to the Police, it is logged and you are given a receipt, if its not claimed within a certain amount of time it becomes yours.

i was given keys to a new(3yr old) truck to drive. i took out the overscreen lockers to fit my cb radio and found 2x expenses envelopes containing £8?.??p. i read the name on them and called the previous company that owned the truck.the transport manager told me that that driver had been sacked for pilfering diesel so i never felt guilty about keeping that. the bloke deserved to lose money for biting the hand that fed him.

Well if that is the case I take back my comments - hand it in to the police!! Chances of someone coming for it are negligible by the sounds of it.  :-/

I have always handed in anything I have found - mainly because if I ever lost anything I hope that what goes around comes around and someone would do the same for me.....  but get a reciept so that the find is recorded somehow.

Also I have a friend who runs a crash repair business - small and family run, he "tests" new employees by asking them to valet a car for return to the customer and he puts a £20 note under the front seat so that the lad will find it if he is doing a good job..... sneaky but it gives a good indication of character if he a/ finds it, b/ hands it in....

I would personally hand it in to the local nick and get a reciept, for the following reasons:

A) It's theft, simple as, it goes against how I was brought up and I wouldn't sleep at night.

B) Because of A you run the risk of getting arrested / convicted.

C) Because of B, you suddenly find it very hard to find anyone to employ you, all for the sake of a couple of months worth of salary.

D) Chances are, if investigations show that nobody has been allocated this money in the will, then nobody will come forwards for it and you'll probably have it handed back by the Plod anyhow, in which case you can book a holiday AND not worry about anything...

Many years ago I was cleaning a 3-piece suite in a large mansion type property in the local countryside which was furnished throughout like a Las Vegas hotel, complete with a roulette wheel and gaming machines. It was owned by what I can only describe as 'upwardly mobile Scouse wideboys', who, if they can do nothing else, know how to make money big time.
When I moved the massive sofa to clean it, I found eight plastic packs of brand new £20 notes lying on the floor which must have represented £8k at least. They still had official looking seals and markings on them, and I do confess to feeling quite shaken by this at the time. Anyway, I handed them to the wife of the family, who didn't bat an eyelid or make any comment at all, but threw them onto a nearby table, possibly to get lost again.
Two days later, I caught up with the news of a local Post Office robbery which had taken place the day before I was doing the cleaning, and I tell you I broke into a sweat wondering whether there was any connection. I told a police officer acquaintance of mine about it, but never heard any more or made any further enquiry. I thought I had done as much as I needed to.

Deffo hand it in.

A hurt conscience will last a hell of a lot longer than a couple of grand.

Besides I've been brought up as a Jehovah's Witness so this kind of thing doesn't even flag up as a choice with me, just one option and that is hand it in. It's great to think that you've done something that made God smile and not just the rightful owner (if there is one) lol

If possible then yes I would.

But I would not hand it in at the police station without some sort of receipt as certain members of the constabulary can be a little light fingered at times. ;D ;D :-* :-* :-* :-*

Reminds me of the time I found 2 lots of rolled up £20 notes outside of a money lending business, thought crossed my mind do I keep or hand in.
My instant thought was my job, I was delivering to the company at the time and found the notes on the way in on the pavement just in front of their door. I handed the notes in to the clerk behind the desk, she just didn't seem bothered about it never even asked who I was. I thought afterwards I wonder where that money ended up, and did some poor sod borrow it then loose it straight away.
I told my employers when I returned to the office what had happened, they were equally unimpressed with my actions, make you think though about did the owner of this money ever get it back and what happened to it.

well i would keep it...an old friend of mine some years ago found an iceland money bag in the street, he picked it up and took it home, he counted out £28,000 in used notes, anyway it was a friday nite so he thought about it over the weekend, didnt hear anything on the news or anything but decided to hand it in... he did so at the branch closest to where he found it, the manager said thank you and he took all his details and would be in contact with veiw to a reward...well he never heard anything for about 6 weeks so he contacted icelands head office and they dont have any details of money being handed in! there was a record of the shop being held up but they said the insurence would have paid out! he has kicked himself so much about it since! i dont have any luck like that, i mean if i found a pay packet in the street the git would have had 3 days off!!!  ;D ;D

when i lost my phone about 10 year ago i had £60 in the phone case.  a couple found it in town and looked at numbers and called my mum. i went to meet them in town and took the money out of the back and gave them £20 for their kindness. i know i'm generous in doing that but just think how much i could have lost in call charges if found by wrong type of person

A bundle of cash, expired owner, right or wrong i'd keep it, sorry but i admit it, i'm shallow. However if i found a purse with id & pension or saw an elderly person drop said purse/wallet i'd give it to them.
A while back i put £20 in the green Mig (i think), paid, & on the way back to the car saw a tenner on the forecourt, as i bent down to pick it up i saw another so pocketed them both.
Also when at the supermarket when collecting or dropping your trolley to get your £1 back look on the floor, i've found a few notes folk drop when retrieving thier quid! 8-)

Yep -- he did the right thing -- especially bypassing the warden ( who might well have kept it!!!). Let's hope the family reward his honesty -- but in the end, he can sleep better (tho poorer !).

Just think the old girl must have scrimped to save that up for a rainy day (or more likely her funeral) -- at least it's in the family.
