Title: Monaro, the king of the road
Post by: omegaV6CD on 27 December 2006, 16:25:57
Boxing day 1.40 in the afternoon, we are in my mate's accord typeR 4 people on the M6, and then there is a scary view on the mirror, a red Monaro VXR we let it go past and then try to chase him, the result was a furious type 3 driver at 8k rpm looking at the monaro pulling away as if it was powered by the eurofighter's jet engines. My mate thought that he would have a chance following the monaro and i was laughing with tears. Warning to everyone DO NOT TRY AND RACE A MONARO it is a beast.

Sometime other peoples optimism is comedy in itself

It is definately a fast car but there is no match to the Monaro, earlier i raced him as we were driving to his girlfriends place and it didn't blow the omega away maybe 2 cars distance. He said that he couldn't Vtech it as it was not fully warmed up.

Hmmm...and, as a matter of interest, at what speed did you decide to stop trying to catch it :-X

I beat one down the A43 from Brackley towards the M40 a few months ago....

....but I was on the Kawasaki ;)

That V8 did sound nice at full throttle though as it appraoched the rev limiter....

Quite frequently I end up following a Civic Type R home from work, and if there is no much traffic, we occasionally have a little blast. The Type R is defo quicker at lower speeds, but seems a little unsettled in corners (I gain on him in sweeping corners, and at higher speeds, but lose out in slower corners)...

Type R will defo begin to lose acceleration around then, and the big V8 will still be purring well...

The problem is that while i appreciate the smallblock v8, i still don't like the idea of pushrod technology on a performance car in year 2006.

All number of TVRs

Holden HSV Commodore, same engine same performance plus practicality of 4 doors, 2nd hand can be bought for similar price to a TVR Ceberra of the same age, i feel a difficult choice coming on towards the end of next year  ;D

fair point about the TVR's, but wuld you want the constant smell of fiberglass and the slightly unpredictable reliability of a TVR?

With something like the monaro joe public still really doesnt know what it is or want it is capible of doing

The HSV commodore sounds interesting though........i take it they were personal imports if they are in the UK?

Having been for a ride in a Tuscan S - the smile factor far out weighs any smell of glue, and as for dodgey reliability, in some cases i bet its no worse than Omega ownership!!

They are 'grey' imports, Linden Special Vehicles have imported them in the past, they will also do the super charger conversion on the LS1 and LS2 V8 engines, they are much more of a 'Q' car than the Monaro, 90% of people would think its a slightly spoilerd up Omega (which in essence it is, just a bit longer and a bit wider)  HAVE A LOOK (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/largepic.asp?i=118314&noPics=3&current=1) ;D

If you take all the sleek looking bumpers and side skirtings off, that car looks exactly like an omega.

Thats because (as i said above) its an Omega floor pan that has been lengthened and widened slightly.

Aparently none of the panels will fit a UK Omega, but some of the interior bits from older versions do

Basically Holden have been using Vauxhall/ Opel for years (as they are the same family), recognise where this Holden from 92 may have come from?? :-

No Monaros at Bicknells today, best car would be a tossup between a stolen recovered GSi3000 and my 2.6CD.

I asked the sales if they had any nice ones to drool over and they said they didn't do Monaros.

Let them know Omegas are better than what they do now

They don't thats VXs problem, why do staff chat about the S&R GSi3000 whistfully, and the MOT tester chatted about the 3.0 Estate he owned but couldn't afford to run (told him that's why I converted my CD to gas)?

Thats also why sales staff give up as soon as you mention the word and comment on dropping of that market.

I think they are used to VGC Omegas coming in for MOTs and some servicing and their owners comiserating with staff.

I have chatted over the years about all the big Opel based cars including with aMonza owner while getting Carlton bits

I am obviously touching wood when I say this, but, ...I have found the two omegas I have owned have caused me very little trouble. And I dont find them that expensive to run/service/repair. They are a big motor(2.5/3.0) and when you buy one, you KNOW what the price of petrol is surely.
