Ok, so at the moment I still have my full time IT job.
I need to explore and look at options for a career change. Many will push me that IT is the place to be, but I've been in this game for the last 8 years and I've never enjoyed it for very long - I do it because it's in my comfort zone.
When you get up and don't want to do the job you do, it's time for a change.
I am actively looking for something different, but I have no idea what. I'm not ready to consider going into full time plodding, I'd rather have a couple of years as a volunteer and see if I still like it then. I'm also worried about turning something I really like into a mundane, day job, a bit like my mechanics work.
Any ideas what career paths I could look at?
I ideally want something where I'm out and about, and not stuck in the office all day.

You are right there James, my daughter has been working in a doctors surgery for the past 3 years and hates the job, she is only19 and i advised her to go into something that she wants to do as she is still young enough, she recently applied to train as a dental nurse, she got the job and starts on the 8th Dec, her money is half whats she is on now but as i told her, she will have 2 years of struggling but a lifetime of benifit from her qualifications, i will make sure she dont go without anyway.
If you aint happy mate its time for a chang. :y :y

I can say as an experience nearly every 10 years is a different period in life..and the things, you like changes proportional to that..
briefly you wont be the same James even after 5 years..
so consider a job which will not force you to work under hard conditions and can always pay your expenses and maintain your life standard..
What is easy for you now wont be easy after 10-20 years..
So good luck with your decision :y

now is not the ideal time to do what i did, but i felt exactly the same way as you did, i was a trainer working for Orange in the call centres and retail.....
Binned it and went self employed initially for the first year or two, working contract through agencies, now a days i have a Ltd company and we tender for contracts and effectively place people who are where i was a few years ago....
I still train as well, i love it, i get to work for different people all the time, there are a lot of downsides, like being away from the family a lot and the financial insecurity when one of your clients goes to the wall owing you a rather considerable sum, but i chose to do this and so i must take the risks that go with it.
James in a way you are not dis-similar to me in your style of doing things, you ae a bit of an activist (and before anyone says i don't mean BNP)by the sounds of things, likes to be in the thick of the action, normally one of the first to voulenteer for something but when it becomes tedious then you are quick to step back from it and want to move on, if that's you then there is nothing wrong with that, use it to your benefit :y

Jay - You've summarised me for the most, apart from one thing.
I don't tend to be in a rush to move on when things get tedious. I look for ways to improve the problem. When people don't listen or care (nhscoughnhs) it's at that point, that I develop a case of the breakems... :y

James you are looking for something else to do, you have commitment and motivation, why not use that energy in getting yourself qualified in a field you would like to go into, by that i mean something like an OU course or night school that would give you a recognised qualification.
That way you have something to focus on outside of work (granted that is the issue) i am trying to create a diversion though whist the jobs market settles down a bit and gives you a chance to re-focus

Why not buy a house in Belfast and rent out rooms ?. I am currently staying in one, there are 10 rooms, prob mostly doubles and the lady charges £34/night single £60/double. They seems to be full most nights. OK a bit of washing and hovering to do, but £300 + per day :o :o :o

May be a bit of a stretch for you but where I am doing some work at the moment in London will be touting for an Active Directory expert in the next few weeks. Probably good for 2-3 months in a really wacky environment and the offer I PM'ed you stands if you want

I don't particularly like my job, but the workday is what you make it imho. The job may get tedious - most do - and the managment brain dead, but you can still make the job enjoyable with the right attitude ;)

sadly, the production role for this server won't have vms running. it has a single infrastructure role

sadly, the production role for this server won't have vms running. it has a single infrastructure role
