hhmmm...i have a dilemma - having just moved out into the depths of the country side, ( farmer, tractor and 4x4 country) i am deliberating with swapping the meega for a 4x4 and have seen a Frontera - dont know a lot about these, but i thought some of you guys may be able to advise?? - it is a 1998 'R' Frontera 'Transglobe', 5 dr, manual, diesel, 2499cc, 122k miles, Full mot, in very good nick...........asking £1295...........what do you guys think?? (obviuosly i will be tryin a deal wi the guy ;) )- i have heard that these are pretty cr*p motors.........?????? - i would very much appreciate any/all you guys expert opinions cos i now have to do a lot of 'country' 'single track' style road driving, and having to put the meega on the grass all the time to let passin 'flat capped, blue rinsed' num nuts by without takin my mirror off, cos they seem to be 'allergic' to goin on grass >:( >:(and that doesnt do my £600 18'' rims a lot of good, but my meega is tip top, looks pretty good, and drives lovely,- so wouldnt want to get rid of her to land up with a piece of s**t...........if you get my drift :-/ - cheers guys TIA :y :y :y
PS - my apologies to any 'flat caps' or 'blue rinsers'.........all in good fun......luv ya really !!!

The first 18 months of production were trouble.....from then on a pretty well screwed together motor which was generaly more off road capable than a Disco!
But then from around 96 onwards they were based on the Isuzu tropper!
I seem to recall you doing reasonable distances regularly though.....if that is the case then any 4x4 will be a pain in the arse
-
cheers mark..........yea, i am VERY reluctant to let the meega go - she is a nice motor, so i think i will err on the side of caution - thanks - i value your opinion :y :y

Wasn't the one based on the Trooper caller the Monterey.
The Frontera is actually a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo
The Frontera is quite a capable car and proper 4x4 with a seperate chassis and a low range box.
I don't know a huge amount about them to tell you what to watch out for. What I do know is Land Rovers and at that price you'd probably be looking at a Discovery on about L to P reg and I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. A long one at that.
-
Original one was based on the rodeo....they changed to a ladder chassis setup around 96/97 which had tropper under pinnings.
The Monterey was the later trooper.....with a badge change
-
Just checked.....model year 1998 saw the Frontera B introduction with full ladder chassis

Yeah, right ;)
About the only thing more capable off road than a Discovery is a Defender.
If you want a 4x4, get a proper one...

Nothing proper 4x4 about a disco.....a defender yes....but a discjoke...

Want to know the best offroaders, look at those who need to use them - farmers, rural emergency services, 4x4 driving centres.
You want to try a disco on a proper 4x4 course, I think you will be surprised by its capabilities.

I'll never forget when I was 18/19 and I attempted to off road my first Rangie.
Took a dip FAR too fast, and ripped off an underslung LPG tank.
Markie and I jumped out, took one look at it hissing away like a goodun - RUN!! ;D
Once it calmed down a bit, I switched off the multivalve by hand, we strapped up the tank temporarily (I'm not saying what with) and carefully limped it home (about a mile) !
-
I'm sure it's against the LPGA COP to attach underslung tanks using iron oxide! ::)

except the v8's, which tend to melt the transfer boxes when towing twin axle pikey wagons at speed ::)
-
not spose to tow pikey wagons. spose to drive over them

Whilst on the subject, what engine would a 99 (V plate) 2.2 petrol Frontera have in it. Was only looking at one today and thought oh it's petrol not diesel, but then wondered what engine it has, same as Omega?

Its not the same lump as Omega. Not sure if its the same as the Vectra or not - believe its chain drive, so possibly
