I hav'nt touched one since the PS2 was new. I fancy another one but by no means a serious gamer & never have been. I like driving, biking, beat 'em ups, some golf games but don't like deep war, RPG, footy sims etc. Played Gran Turismo but never built cars or saved anything to memory card, happy to find a track, stage, bike or car i liked & perfect it.I played Wipout to death!!! Then the playstation was more suited to me than the x box given the nature of the games but is this the same now with the ps3/xbox 360? Don't care which is the more powerful, better graphics etc.
Don't want it in the living room so can i run it through the desktop monitor/sounds, & if so how would i select channel to run it or leave the tower switched off?
Also considering one of these plasma monitors. Could they display the game or can i keep this monitor just for gaming?
Sorry for the long post but things have moved on somewhat since my last console. :-/

If the ps/2 does what you want, why not keep your cash in your back pocket ;)

Hav'nt got it any more but could find another. Does the ps3 have decent driving games? & what about the monitor issue?

xbox certainly has a vga lead (extra £15) as its what i use. Not sure about gayStation, seems to be based around hdmi (and the drm that entails)
-
hdmi/drm? I'd rather know than trust the sales staff?
PS's on your gay list then? ;D

Yes - the Motorstorm series is great fun.
Haven't got GT5 yet, waiting for full version
Sega Rally is OK
Burnout Paradise is a fun game
Pro street is OK

IF you get the PS3, hunt on eBay for the older 60gb model, the new ones have no backwards compatibility so won't play your PS1/PS2 games.

AND make sure its a UK 60gb PAL version as the import ones play all PS3 games, BUT only NTSC DVDs and PS1/2 games :)

And that was pretty piss-poor at backwards compatibility ;D
The xbox ain't great for backwards either, so I wouldn't buy a console for playing older games, esp when you can pick up ps/2 and original xboxes for peanuts.
-
I have no ps2 or games anymore so backwards compatibility not an issue, will buy hard & software from scratch. Still need advice on whether i can run it through a pc moniter either the one i'm using or if i buy a plasma jobbie can i use my existing one seperatly. Niether my monitor or tower have scart sockets.....
........Help, don't want to get ripped off. ::)

as said earlier, certainly a vga option on the sexbox360. No idea about gayStation

Why not call it 'vexedbox360' then, given the reliability issues with it ;D

For driving games theres only one option. PS3 and Grand Turismo Prologue :y

Good luck on that one.
Prime example of the PS3 downfall, it takes AGES to develop bespoke games for it, talking 2/3 years here!
GT5 demo was shown when i was at uni!

lol. Still, at least unlike Sony, MS did the responsible thing and sorted the issues, and extended all warranties to 3yrs

PS3 / 360 - well, lots of reasons for getting each. I've used both, but own a PS3. I think it's better as a media center type console, particularly if you hook up to HD telly - but your not going to, are you? If you're not, then the PS3 can go to VGA, but needs a cable ('bout 20 quid).
I replaced my DVD player in the front room, and it worked really well with decent upscaling for DVD's and Bluray has won the battle with HD-DVD (which is what the Xbox was going to support).
Additionally, the PS3 (not sure on the Xbox here) can wirelessly connect to a network and with little effort on your PC you can stream video, internet, your pictures, etc all from the comfort of your armchair.
The games... well - swings and roundabouts. PS3 hasn't been out for long. It's a bitch to develop for, BUT has some reasonable advantages over the 360 with regards to memory, and oomph, so I'd expect games to come to end up being prettier and better on PS3.
360 install base is *much* bigger though, although they've had a few years head start with that, and a price advantage.
As previously mentioned - 60Gb model did *some* backwards compatability - but if I were you, I'd read that as 'none'. It's terrible. They try and emulate several parts of the original PS2 hardware in software, which usually spells disaster, and in this case I think did.
Back on track... (you like racing titles)
...GT5 - Prologue. Is brilliant, but I wouldn't play without a decent wheel and pedals. It's fantastic fun to drift an M5 round some twisty Alpine track - but it's just not the same on a pad. Particularly the cheap and tacky PS3 pad (which doesn't come with rumble as standard - unless they're now included in the console packs).
...SEGA Rally. Decent good fun in an arcade style. Came out on 360 too though. Again - great fun with a wheel, but 10x more chuckable than GT5.
...Colin McRae : DiRT from Codies. I had great fun with this too, although it's a bit more serious than Rally. Took a bit of time and patience getting in to the swing of things but it looks great.
...Need For Speed / EA Racers. I've been disappointed with these for a while. Last couple of racers EA put out have missed - with sales being driven by hard marketing.
Alternatively to alllllll of that - why not blow the dough on a decent wheel and pedals (Logitech G25 is brilliant) and get your PC hooked up to some driving games that way? There's some decent games out there for the PC. They tend to be cheaper, and if your PC's half decent then you can spend hours driving with similar feel and handling as GT5 on a console...
...this'll be the longest post I've made I think :) Hope you have fun whatever you go with...
-
Thanks for the long post & info. I don't want the console under the telly but in my computer desk preferably running on this moniter when i've got the plasma for the pc unless i can run it through the same one as the pc. At least iv'e got an idea of which questions to ask now. :D 8-)

I;m still waiting 8yrs for Sony UK to admit fault with my telly (pretty much all other regions did fairly quickly)

kvm switch.
Allows 2 sources (pc and 360) to connect to 1 monitor (designed for 2 pc's as also switces keyboards and mouse, but works fine with a PC and and xbox). Just switch to which ever source you wish to use.
360 VGA cable, aprox 20£

Cheers. Written all that down. Foreamed etc... You use the xbox as example but i take it's the same with the ps3(sorry TB) the games are more for me, don't give a rats about Sony brand in particular. 8-)

Double edged sword Jaime.
Traded for years on being top quality and you will agree that up to the mid 90s Sony stuff was top quality. Then they had to drop prices to survive, and now is not much better than other makes.
The PS3 IS good, but my most recent DVD player is Pioneer.
To be honest Sony stuff generally still performs well but we now have the funny position of say a Sony Walkman being not the most expensive player but still near top for quality - OK Jaime Ipod or Walkman ;D ;D ;D ;D
My Sony video camera is unreliable but did perform excellently, I will replace with Sony HDV after careful analysis of cameras, yet my old SL-F1 portable still works despite being about 25 - 26 years old.

The walkman was from an era when Sony made decent stuff ;)

I knew you would - but then the last Sony HDD Walkmans were excellent and the new flash memory ones are quite good.
The HDD ones basically were an evolutional step along from the Minidiscs so used ATRAC and not MP3.
My HiMD is OK - well it sounds great through Sennheiser headphoness

If you only get one console and you don't have kids then I would say Xbox 360. I was umming and ahhing on wether to get the 360 or PS3 when GTA 4 came out and I think I've made the right choice. If you buy a new 360 the reliability should now be okay as they have changed the mother boards to a more reliable design. If your buying used then if it has the HDMI socket on the back and it's a white (non -elite) then it will have the revised mother board. AFAIK Elites all have HDMI but don't all have new mother board.
Xbox offers a far superior online gaming service and you can use it as a media server so it will play movies stored on your PC on your telly by streaming over a wireless network (wireless adaptor £60 ish)
Top games to look for are:
Forza Motorsport 2 - Kicks GT5's arse fully and includes endless customisable graphics on the cars. Even has a Lotus Carlton which is a bit like an Omega. If you squint.
Test Drive Ulimited is pretty cool. You can drive around the entire island of Oahu in Hawaii in a number of exotic cars.
Alot of other driving games such as the Need for Speed series, Midnight Club, Grand Theft Auto 4, Colin McRae Dirt etc. aren't xbox exclusive but tbh theres so little in the the games themselves that I would plump for the Xbox because of the superior online gaming, far comfier controller and cheaper games.

Did I metion you can also rent via downlaod hundreds of HD movies?
Also you can download classic games like Streets of Rage 2 and Sonic from the Mega Drive among hundreds of others
-
Wireless included with PS3 and for HighDef movies it plays BluRay DIscs
-
gaystation 3 is the better console on the market at the moment hardware wise.
cheapest blu-ray player going, and plays games with amazing graphics. all sorts of games available, incl. some really good driving sims.
gaybox 360 is the best value ratio - hardware:price

I remember when Sega Sponsored Arsenal, the Sega and Dreamcast logo's were all removed from the Arsenal shirts in Fifa on the Playstation yet Nintendo allowed the PlayStation sponorship to saty on the Prost cars in F1 World Grand Prix...
... I'm such a geek
-
Talking of games consoles,my 24 year old son is sat beside me playing super mario 3 on his original nintendo console. ::) ::)
retrieved from loft recently, hasnt been off it since.
-
Sonic, Streets of rage 2 (always played as Blaze cos you could see her white knickers when she kicked!)
Is there a decent game review site that might help me make my mind up? Buying new but not bundled with games, driving, fighting, golfing quick blast games.
BTW, anyone remember Bomberman? 8-)
