Title: Name/recommendation for that "tape"
Post by: Hoffi on 22 November 2008, 15:51:52
Hi all,
I am trying to fit a new door foil in my misses Japanese car. This ones are glued to the door with a nasty adhesive black stuff rather than with double-faced adhesive tape.
I have already tried to find this tape in shops arround here but everybody is sending me to the Maindealer which in my opinion is totally unnecessary (and would be horrible expensive too).
Can anybody tell me the proper name for that tape or maybe give me a link from e-bay where to purchase this stuff?
Or any other recommendations how to fit the foil at the door?

Thanks a lot!

The Hoffi

I know the stuff you mean, but also dont know what its called.

Its very similar to that black temporary roof repair stuff you can buy in a silicone tube?

@zirk: Exactly that stuff I meant!  :y

I have tried to do it with the double-faced adhesive tape used by Volkswagen but that stuff might be too old now or it is too cold to stick proper.  :(

Can't remember the name of it, but it is very like the stuff you use to seal vac bag when doing composites. So any composite material supplier should be able to supply it for you, I think we bought ours from "Amber Composites" failing that I have a roll at work.

Mike

P.S. can find out for sure where we got in from on Monday.

Found it, called sealant tape and from here. http://www.ambercomposites.com/downloads/datasheet/consumables-product-guide.pdf

Should also have added, whilst it is called "tape" it is not tape, it just comes in a roll on a backing paper, it is very sticky and water proof.

You can get double sided tape from carpet shops and probably diy shops. :y

@Mike: That stuff it is!

@ Albitz: You can't use any double tape for the door foils. You need stuff that is water resistant. The VAG stuff is really good for it and it is paper thin!

I had a search through the internet but couldn't find a place where to purchase!  :(

Does anybody have connections to Würth? They have it for sure, should be called Butyl "rope".
The advert is in German but the picture gives the right impression of what I am looking for. Usually it is available in diferent shapes, I would prefer the round diameter app. 4-5 mm.
