Title: Prevention is better than cure
Post by: Auto Addict on 23 November 2008, 08:45:46
I've been thinking about this for some time.

Nobody likes working on their cars at this time of the year, but it seems to me that during the winter months the most problems occur.

How about the top preventative tips to keep our miggies running smoothly during these cold wet months, i.e. must do's during the summer months, and collate them together for the Maintenance Guides?

Thinking more along the lines of not 'How to's' but must do's.

What do you think guys?

I hope that by doing all the proactive stuff in the nice warm months, at most I will only be changing oil in the cold, dark winter months.

I reckon that's a cracking idea AA :y
You're bang on with the prevention, i hate working on my car in the cold & i'll avoid doing so if i can. That's why i've been checking & changing before we get the cold snap for some time now.

Ok I'll start one

1. Regular oil and filter changes with a good quality oil (suggestion, every 3000 to 5000 miles)

2. Clean out breathers, throttle body and IVC every year (do not leave for more than 2 years)

3. Make sure you have the correct anti-freeze (Vx only 50/50 mix)

4. Folow the guide for servicing your hand brake.

5. Use the air con regularly, at least one a month.

Exactly. Perhaps we should give a checklist for major service.

I would add, check the battery - the cold mornings may catch you out if your battery not tip top, even though you though it was good.
