Title: Possible VAT decrease?
Post by: jjleonard on 22 November 2008, 22:54:42
Just heard on the news that VAT is slated to drop from 17.5% to 15%, for at least a year.

F***in hell! Would be nice if it STAYED low, though...  ::)

key word to note there is "possible", and given this country's solid reputation, "possible" may as well mean "unlikely" in this case!!

I don't think that such a cut will make a lot of difference for most purchasing, insomuch that it would not encourage me to buy something that I would not have otherwise bought :-/

All adds up Mike.

Lets face it.

22% on what you earn
17,5% on what you spend in most cases
Plus extra taxes on fuel and some other items  plus duties even as you Die.

20% as you earn
15% as you spend, 12,5% would be even better.

Allthough its not a lot at least its a start and in the right direction.

How right you are with the country borrowing money at the rate of £2,000 per second at 16-17%!! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

It will all have to be paid back someday! ::) ::) ::)

Anyone for a revolution, or simply a trip to the moon? :D ;)

totally agree....problem is so much of the UK wil see Brown as doing a great job digging us out a hole.....

However theres a far bigger canyon round the corner.

On a personal note i was going to be making a sizeable purchase tomorrow, £xxxx pounds + VAT, think i`ll just wait and see what happens with VAT...ie if any cut is immediate.

This rather government doesn't learn. This is exactly what brought the housing market to a halt when they started spinning stories about the stamp duty holiday ages before they were ready to act. >:(

If they're going to take steps to liven the economy up then fair enough, but at least keep them under wraps until they're in place.

Personally, I think the country can't afford it, and if we were spending normally and taxing normally we wouldn't have such a crisis. Everyone, Whitehall included, seem to be jumping on the "doom bandwagon" that the media are whipping up. Either that or Brown is digging us deeper into debt to sweeten the public up for an election campaign.

So, if you need to make economies, make cancelling your newspapers and your Sky subscription the first things to go. >:(

Totally agree with you Kevin and totall disagree with the economic polices we are about to "see"

My purchaes would have been tomorrow regardless of economic or political changes just going to delay it a day and see what comes out in the wash.

Will it change my anti Brown anti Labour stance? Not a bloody chance  >:(

But i`ll take the potential £75 vat refund on my purchase if its going  :-/
