This morning the Liberal Vince Cable MP, who has gained much cred recently over his financial abilities, was interviewed on the Andrew Marr show this morning, and he confirmed that the Government is borrowing money from the Arab States at 16/17% interest! :o :o :o :o :o :o
I know that the Government is borrowing money at the rate of £2,000 per second...............now many years ago it was predicted by the 16th Century monk Nostradamus that Great Britain would be invaded by the Arabs in hundreds of years time...................is this that time??!! :o :o :D ;)
Whatever happens we are going to pay for all this, so enjoy the "tax cuts" whilst they last!! ::) ::) ::) :(

We may not be "invaded" as such. When we default on our loans the arabs will hire the russians as bailiffs. They will come in and do a quick stock check and realise that we cant repay as the country is 'on benefits'. They will pass it over to the french who, with glee, will auction off the houses of parliament etc. at a knock down price. The chinese will buy the lot as a bulk purchase and we will all be made to work in small badly-lit factories making plastic what-nots for the chinese people to buy and throw directly into the bin.
I think. :-/

Not going to disagree, but as a youngster that dropped History as soon as possible for Sociolagy and Economics i was thinking mid to late `80s.
Last Great British thing i remember was the Falklands :y

Brown went to see the Saudis recently to try and get them to fund the building of the long overdue Nuclear power stations. If only Blair had got on with building them when he was in office.
I still cannot understand why Britain doesn't have the final say over energy company proposed price increases. The French do with EDF but not the British for example. Similarly the Spanish government does.
Spain is also heading down the slippery road. A Russian company is buying a 14% chunk of Repsol (gas and petrol company) from la Caixa (a Spanish bank). Under EU rules the government cannot veto it.

That was a very brave and wonderful "British venture" by Maggie T., but we were highly stretched, relying much on American support behind the scenes, and very nearly lost it. This was because the British no longer had the true overwhelming fire power that before 1914 involved the Royal Navy having a "two Power Standard", that mean't the Royal Navy was designed to fight the navvies of two foreign powers at once! 8-) 8-) 8-)
The Falklands "battle" fleet could not be formed today, and the British can no longer go out and commit themselves to battle without other nations (USA usually) supporting them. In reality that is what was proved all those years ago in 1956, when even with French and (secretly ::) ::)) Israeli military support we couldn't "pull it off" against Egypt because we lacked USA (financial) support.
Now the Arabs are in control, but not via military rescource, but financial might. :o :o How the World changes! ::) ::) ::)

The predictions that Nostradamus made were pretty ambiguous really Lizzie...so lets all hope for the best on the Arab invasion front. ;D ;D
I think that for many people hard times lie ahead. :-/
Gordon brown may(possibly) be correct that we need to borrow yet more to help kickstart the economy again........David Cameron could well be right that there will be huge tax rises in the future.
I suppose we will all find out in time. :y :y :y :y

1956........So it was all the fault of Anthony Eden then Lizzie.....Tory toff ....not a great PM in my opinion. :y :y

Yes, a very ill man who completely misjudged the situation and diplomatic fallout his actions, due both to his condition and lack of experience at anything but being the Foreign Secretary*, would cause! :( :( :(
*Even Churchill was very uncertain of Eden becoming PM before this catastrophic event but still handed power to him on 5th April 1955 after much hesitation. ::) ::) ::)

By 1955 ...Churchill was 80 years old ....and apparently his marbles did not roll quite as freely as they should....Past it...basically. ;D :y

Trust me on this one, the French Army has yet to forgive us over that one. They dont give a flying monkey's about kicking Napoleon's arse, but leaving them in the lurch at the 11th hour on orders from our loanshark (The USA) was truely a dispicable and cowardly act. :'(

Indeed it was on Eden's part, and as Churchill later stated "I am not sure if I would have gone in [to Suez], but I certainly would not have pulled out!".
Churchill IF he had ever contemplated such a risky act at this time of life, with his knowledge, would certainly have brazened it out with the Yanks, but Eden did not have that psychological, political or physical strength to face up to the Americans at the risk of lossing £millions of desperately needed financial loans! :(

As regards the Falklands.
One of the things that made it possible was the British Merchant Navy. Sadly a thing of the past, there are ships on the British register for tax purposes that are neither British crewed or owned, and anything British owned is abroad for the same reason. British crewed from top to toe is very rare these days. :'(

Not being picky (yes, I am !) but shouldn't that be "Bow to stern" of "Fore to aft" ??? ::) Too much time on my hands ::)

I want to see what Arabs do when their perol finishes ;D :D
The problem with them is, they dont like to work. And the technology
they all have is import..
And about Great Britain..May be dont have money..But have the
necessary skills, technology and good educated people..This can
change everything..Imho only lacking population..And thats easy to
solve ;D ;D
And about China..They have the money, population and technology..
(though the population work under bad conditions) ..
