Title: Laptop DC Sockets - Solder wont melt :-/
Post by: Ian_D on 24 November 2008, 16:48:32
I’ve noticed recently that Acer laptops appear to be a nightmare to desolder. The iron (which was a cheap one) just didn't melt the solder!

I thought that the soldering iron was knackered, so told my boss to buy a decent one ;D.

£50ish later I now use a temperature controlled Antex 50w Iron.

This has worked a treat doing DC sockets, until I attempted an Acer laptop again... the solder just WONT melt!  :-/ (I even set the iron on max - 450 deg C)

Do Acers use a different type of solder? Or is it just me be stupid? I could have smashed the laptop today quite easily – spent over 1 hour replacing the bloody socket!!!

Try using some flux or a dab of solder with flux, that may shift it.

50 quid will only buy a budget iron.

And turning the temp up will do little, make sure you use a large bit to.....and you will need 50W+
