Title: Credit Crunch, IS it actually affecting YOU??
Post by: Bacon Butty Man on 25 November 2008, 10:22:38
As some of you are aware i am in the debt industry and am able to write loans off and reclaim penalty charges back, while we do advertise locally, most of our work is word of mouth, but we have not noticed any uprise in custom, now this is either due to the general public not being worried or got head in the sand. BIlls?? what bills!!

Head in the sand? Like the chancellor, you mean?

I'd say slightly affected, mainly due to confidence being hit. Companies in the industry in which I work were recruiting merrily 6 months ago. Most have stopped. Projects requiring major investment are going on hold within the industry (mobile telecomms) and focus is shifting to prolonging the life of investments that have already been made.

Personally, it hasn't affected me at all. Still working and getting paid, but not about to go and blow my savings on a Monaro.

Here, earnings a little down, due to less overtime etc, nothing major.
However, my staff rate mortgage has come down by more than my loss of earnings....

But must say I am affected as the Bank I work for, is being taken over...

I'm affected by it. I am/was self employed doing surveys for councils but due to many councils losing money, they have stopped non essential work. Luckily, I have no credit cards and the wife earns just enough to cover the household bills. One other down side is, there is an ever increasing amount of unemployed people and it seems to me that employers know this and have reduced the wages offered to new employee's or its the amount of immigrants willing to work for pennies. There are loads of jobs about for £6 hr, but nothing with a reasonable wage or maybe its me being unreasonable :(

Yep, had to move jobs and I am now working 50 miles away.

Trying to sell the house but nobody is buying at the moment.

No debts other than the mortgage (which is less then 35% of the house value)

Think i've mostly been affected by other people being affected.

Firstly by there being a general fedupness, lackofmoneyness and sometimes depression among friends and customers alike.

There does seem to be a view among the over 35s that we've got a recession (aka Credit Crunch for the marketers!) on the way, been there, lived through it, no worries but tighten the belts. But in the under 35s there's almost no experience of working through a recession and in the under 20s no experience of living through one!

I've heard 'can't do that-i've no money' so many times recently that it's sad. We've been spoiled for years so budgeting doesnt factor in most peoples lives. i'm lucky my dad showed me the motley fool way when i was 21 so it's not been easy but being self employed keeps my head above water. I know most brits just get on with life but heads are down. What happened to looking at the sunnier side?! 8-) Maybe after some hard times we'll be a happier lot.  :-/ Or not.

The number of folks going out to the pub and clubs has dropped lots which affects me most. It's hard to play to a half-full or less room! I think the stupid drinking culture we have has made people forget that going out is about socialising mostly, maybe some dancing, eating and drinking. Of which having a drink (alcoholic or not) is only a part. The thousands of sober nights i've had in a nightclub are testament to that! It is possible to have fun cheap nights out, but lots of folks would rather have nights in which is a big shame. The rate we're going, when people want to go out more there'll be no bloomin pubs left to meet up in!

I guess i've also been affected as the main company I work for hasn't given me a pay rise in $%£& years 'due to increasing costs and reduced profits' !!!

ah hard christmas ahead, it full speed with the freebies!

PS I love drinkin i do, i just wish people were better at it  :y

From a purely personal point of view its impacting us, in a positive manner.

No loss of earnings at work and bonuses going up. Industry as yet unaffected.

House prices in Scotland are now levelling out - ie not declining in value like England

Mortgage is also just about to go lower than it was on the intro rate we took out 3 years ago  :y

With a back ground in finance i kind of knew rocky times were ahead so we have saved hard for the last 18months just to be on the safe side, ie in case of a job loss, or huge mortgage hike..

Not affected YET, my job reasonably safe but wife works for a medium size builder as a secretary/PA. Her job is the most unstable at the moment and if she looses we will have a very merry xmas NOT.

We seem to be ok at the moment. I work and my wife stays at home with the baby and we dont see a need for her to work at the mo. I work in a Manufacturing plant and there are lots of spending cut backs at the mo. I work in IT and i am the only one who does the job so as long as the place stays open then my job is safe

The company I work for is starting to feel the pinch so things are starting to tighten up a bit. We use relief drivers when drivers go on holiday and now we can't use them until further notice. On the downside all the full time drivers we have at all the branches 1 has to be laid off for the duration but they are still employed by us so when things start to pick we can get them back so hopefully it will be very short term. I know its not fair but but our hands are tied this is down to the two MD's, they don't like doing it but they have no choice due to the banks not realy lending at the mo even if they are the interest rate is to high so some layoff's are needed. Thankfully my boss is coming down tomorrow and hopefully he will be doing the honours.

other jobs start come late or no pay :( which forces me to use credit

cards more than usual..And I start to cut extras because theres no

meaning to be exhausted from nights work where theres no pay..

And some projects already been delayed or stopped.. :-/

Would you mind using this one, as your avatar is too big and I can't read your posts.

Not really affected yet -- apart from general belt tightening due to inflation racing ahead of pay rises.

Thank goodness for the missus .... she has been saving loyalty points and does paid surfing for pennies. Been squirelling it away all year and it has literally paid for Christmas ( with some left over) --- food, pressies, xcards .. the lots !!!!!!!

I've got about £150 in shrapnel which will pay for the food. I always empty my pockets into a big jar when I come in. The bloke at the Post Office gets a bit annoyed when he see's me walking through the door with bags of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50p's ;D

I am seriously and painfully caught by the drop in house prices... My flat in Plymouth had a 95% mortgage on it. That's now more like 120% and I can't afford to keep it and have a roof over my head here.

The inevitable is vveeerrryyyy sloowwwlly happening.

Crap.

Still, I have my health. And hopefully the receiver will let me keep my miggy...  :o

Where was the option for "Things have actually improved for me"?

I sold up 2 years ago as I could see it coming, bought outright in Cairo with my Dad and am looking forward to buying again at the bottom of the market.

I owe no-one a penny.

I work for Capita who are doing well and supply software and services to Local and Central Government who need the systems to reduce their costs.

It's easier to recruit right now.

It's easier to retain staff right now.

Sorry :-/

EDIT: And I hear taxes are going to go down a tad too.

I think it has affected us but positively.  Jue got sick of those £6 an hour jobs and is now self employed.., its not easy if u get a bad week or two but its much better working for yourself even so.  And I suspect that if u can provide goods cheaply, u'll find yourself more popular, not less.

I also remember the last recession and was briefly unemployed during it.  Then, there just weren't cheap shops, very few cheap brands in mainline supermarkets and buying food was a nightmare.  Now buying food inexpensively is easy if u are prepared to shop around.  I was actually quite shocked when I went into Asda's recently at how relatively expensive things there were as I am so used to going to the budget chains.

Because of the newly self employed status of the family, Christmas is going to be a bit limited but think I can manage to get one main present for the kids rather than really, wasting money on lots of  things they play with for five mins before getting bored.  Making sure that what they do get, they really will enjoy and play with over and over rather than getting a mountain of stuff they don't really want.  Not totally comfortable with it but I think it'll work out.  Next year will be better tho!

currently i am financially no better or worse off, however i find i am putting more money away in savings just in case something happens i and i have a lean period once this current contract comes to an end.

I am generally optimistic and hope that what i have lined up will see me through to the end of this and into better times again.......and then i have my wife bring me back down to earth >:( >:( >:(

Its affected me so far in that I've lost my job, and even tho I've found another one fairly quickly its only on a temp contract.

I've gone from being paid weakly weekly to monthly just to make matters worse, and owing my last wages cheque bouncing I've had to borrow to see me through this month, so I'll owe out this months wages, and if my contract doesnt get renewed then the Christmas wage will be my last until I find another job.
