Hey all
Need to pick the techies brains.
My kids are getting a Wii & a PS3 for xmas
Due to ex-wife etc, I can't be there to set them up for them so I'm having to rely on my 15 year old son setting both up & getting them online ( junior is gagging to join the COD family)
I know they have a bog standard broadband setup at home, with a Pc downstairs, so I was a bit dubious whether a wireless link would have a decent enough signal upstairs to connect both in the rooms, plus I don't think my son will be able to set up a wireless network.
So I was going to go wired. Buy the cables & let junior plug them in.
My plan is to buy either 2 30m RJ45 cables and a RJ45 "Y" adaptor for behind the modem. Or RJ45 "Y" adaptor behind the modem, to a RJ45 cable up the stairs with a "Y" adaptor upstairs with 2 cables running off to their rooms.
Is this workable?? or have I forgotten anything?

You cant use Y adaptors on full duplex eternet.
Actualy, the wireless side of things is easy....they should just need to know the password for the router and jobs a goodun. I suspect you could even enter the code before wrapping the presents up.

been using Zyxel P600 series no problem with wireless and the cable connections from upstairs downstairs..
configuration setup screens are very good also but a bit complicated..

I would go for wireless method...
Its neater than having wires trailing eveywhere and safer.
I have a wireless router downstairs and a 2 pcs and printer upstairs, all connected to the router downstairs.....and all 3 get a pretty good signal, in fact better than my lappy i use downstairs and in the same room lol.
Is it not possible perhaps to pop round a few days before Christmas day and set them up.......so they're ready to go on the day?

Yep -- I would say wireless too (must get round to getting a dongle for the Wii -- any recomendations .... I assume it will need one).
Anyway -- I bet your 15 year old is computer savvy ---- mine were always teaching me what to do when they lived at home ::)

Agreed, wireless is the way forward - got a Wii, Xbox360, 2 x desktops and the laptop I'm typing this on networked to my router :y

You don't need one - the Wii has built-in WiFi
