AVG or Avast?
Used to like AVG 7.5
-
AVG 7.5 in home ..
-
i have avg 8.0 :y :y
-
Newish 7.5 download - I wonder where?
-
I use Avast I found AVG to be processor hungry when I last used it
-
AVG 8.0 heavy weight..but of course better in protection..
-
AVG 8.0 here.
My only complaint is that it sometimes fails to connect to the update site.
Find the setting in options for the email scanner, certification and turn off those annoying Scanned by AVG Free messages it adds to your emails.
Fine otherwise.
P.S. For free software, it bl**dy good :y

Anyone use Symantec??.....mine keeps saying it using a 1999 definition file....altho it does reckon it downloading latest file :-/

That stuff is a nightmare to get off your PC. You have my sympathy...
-
I changed to Avast a couple of years ago and it seems to run slightly faster :y :y

i use avg 8 and it seems fine 8-) never tried avast. used to have norton systemworks and that really messed up lots of processes!
-
actually hsbc have given me a link this week to a 'free' Mcafee VirusScan Plus for 12 mths. think it's all sorts of security as well as virus scan..
not sure if it's worth doing tho as will it leave a trail of unremovable files like Norton?
i already have zone alarm and avg.... and spywareblaster and spybot and adaware....

had that problem but quite rare i think

Personally, I use, and prefer, AVG Free. Fantastic free piece of software there! Never really tried Avast that much but AVG is so good, I'm not looking to change.
Don't get me started on Symantec. Bloody awful. Seen someone locked out of his own computer by that evil thing before!

NOOO! Don't do it.
It's as bloated, unconfigurable and resource hungry as Norton/Symantec.
IMO - and based on direct experience.
AVG free and Windows Firewall is fine if you are using a NAT router.
Get the free Zone Alarm firewall if directly connected to the 'net.

Woo - Netgear router here aswell! AVG and a hardware firewall in a NAT router - a winning combination! :y

Same here, but Windows Firewall is still switched on.
My defences still aren't good enough, but they go like this:
Network.
Wireless router. WPA-2 encryption for wireless.
NAT and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) turned on.
ICMP (am I pingable?) turned off.
Up to date firmware.
PC
AVG Free 8.0
Windows firewall.
MS Windows Defender - Clicky (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&mg_id=10134)
All religiously up to date.
Plus a good Hosts file. Not for everyone, but it's an added layer of protection. Clicky - warning - a bit Techy. (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
My Widows login has a password...
Browser.
Firefox.
NoScript add on. NoScript clicky. (http://noscript.net/)
If I wasn't so lazy I would make a login for myself that didn't have Admin rights.
As I said above - it still isn't good enough. Something WILL beat it at some point...

I now use the free version of Comodo Firewall/ Antivirus.
It has a good write up in the computer press and has won awards.
When I ran the Firewall (without the anti-virus), I checked it out on
a site recommended by a computer magazine. The site trys to break
into your computer and gives a report. It reckoned mine was
completley stealthed and it couldn't break through any ports.
So I took AVG antivirus off one computer and Avira antivirus off
the other and put the combined Comodo Firewall/ Antivirus on both.
Both computers now run faster with just one program fulfilling
both functions instead of two separate programs running in the
background all the time.

Review by CNET and some views by some users.
If you do download, make sure you use the link in the previous
post from Comodo direct. That way you'll get the latest version
and you'll make sure that you get the combined Firewall/ Antivirus
and not the separate Firewall and Antivirus programs.

Used to use AVG - now Avast - faster than AVG and just as good.
Windows firewall krap - use Comodo or Zone Alarm.
MS Defender not over good - Spyware Doctor is good, or use Spybot (FOC).
Lock Hosts file!
Wireless - WPA2 - do not use WEP - its so easy to hack!!!

Its good but...........
last weekend I was looking for some auto backup software for the wife's Tungsten E. I got all these messages saying that AVG had scanned all these sites and they were safe. Well guess what, one had that damn window saying "your computer needs a repair, click here to do it", and when you clicked the close box, it just restarted. Guess they missed that one :'( :'( :'(

Cable modem,Netgear Router.
No Windows.
No Virus or spyware for the last 4 years.
Even if you dont run more than one PC then get a simple Router--it will save you a lot of hassle. All the nasties from the outside world see is the router-not your PC.
