Title: my other car poor running
Post by: jimmas on 02 December 2008, 19:45:30
Hi guys
my other car is a ford mondeo, hoping some one may be able to throw some suggestions my way.
firstly car is a mondeo 2.0 tddi on a 2002 plate.
now it has developed a missfire / hesitation problem which has got worse over 2 weeks to the point of only just starting after a lot of persuision. Have replaced fuel filter, does not make any difference, when it does start it is hard to rev and as said hesitate also throws a lot of black smoke out the back whilst trying to rev. on idle the revs are trying to go up and down,
wondered if it could be an egr valve problem, also there is no engine managment light on.
any help appreciated.

Cam sensor is the common issue on them....trouble is they often need a reset with the diag tool after changing

You have two options:

a) scrap the damn thing
b) set it on fire and scrap the damn thing

 ;)

Is my historty with my previous mundaneo showing? You should have let me know you had one - I've just had a scrappy take away my 53 plate TDCI because of clutch failure - you could have had it for nothing!

I had an air intake pipe split on the turbo - located under the front bumper, drivers side it I recall - which, although it was a tiny split, caused the fuel /air mixture to go haywire, created massive clouds of black smoke, and hesitant idling.

Under acceleration the problem got worse - severe lack of power as the split sucked in more air and threw the mixture out again.

Other than that, I must confess I don't know - i hated that car and was finally glad when I got rid of it.  ;)

IIRC the 53 plate (04 model year) TDCI engine was a different engine and therefore the layout may have changed - I didn't know that much about them at that point, but it costs nothing to check!

I must also say that I noticed a hissing when accelerating - even when driving with the windows closed. If you can hear this, then get the pipe sorted QUICK, as the pipe sucks up extra cr*p into the turbo, intercooler and pipework, which I'm sure helped the expiry of my turbo and cost me £1800 to fix at a ford dealer.

Anyway...

Under the bumper, my car had a back plastic trim which extended the width of the car and 'protected' the pipework above it. Remove three plastic thumbscrews to remove this, and you should see the a 2-3" dia rubber pipe running along the front of the car (I think - I last saw this a year ago, and the car was on a ramp at the time).

Inspect the pipe carefully for splits by flexing it between your fingers. examine carefully any worn parts. The split in the pipe was half an inch long, and we only spotted it after careful examination. The pipe itself is cheap to replace (I think it was about 30 quid).

Having re-read your post, I don't think this is your problem, but it's well worth a look. Drove me nuts, and was highly embarassing in traffic!

Hi markdtm

would the cam sensor give those sort of problems, I have no management lights on.

Earmed up my car this morning, stood by the bonnet, there was a Mundano idling about 40 feet away, I couldn't hear my car over the Diesel death rattle on the Mundano
