Title: Insurance business use all drivers
Post by: pscocoa on 06 December 2008, 09:52:52
Just to alert you to a practice I do not think is bona fide.

I wanted insurance on my wife's Signum for her, me and 2 children all with business use and a mileage of 20000 per annum in total.

I was offered cover by Adrian Flux via Norwich Union. Paid premium and issued with cover note. When actual certificate arrived only my wife covered for business use. Referred back to Flux who confirmed it was covered and would get certificate from Norwich U.

This never came - and have been trying on and off since to get it clarified - Flux just keep issuing cover notes for a month with the cover required written on it. Anyway 6 months on - enough is enough - asked for full refund as I do not want to get into middle of a dispute if there is a claim. Referred matter to Ombudsman and complained to Flux - they are now going to full refund of all premium and I have taken out precisely the cover I want with Elephant same as the Omega - i.e. 4 drivers all business use. Flux should not be doing this. I think this is the 3rd time I have had to have the Ombudsman involved regarding Norwich Union car insurance.

Thanks for the warning; another example of how you have to be so careful when dealing with insurance companies, specifying what you exactly require, compared to what they actually provide!! :o :o

You obviously know how to deal with the bastwards of that industry, but so many do not and thus drive around without the correct insurance cover. ::) ::) ::) ::)

For a few months I worked as a self emplyed contractor, between main jobs, for Cornhill Direct in a main Bristol Call Centre, and it was amazing how many times I spoke to customers who were using their cars outside of the terms of their Insurance agreement ie incorrect use, unknown named drivers, uninsured business use, etc, etc!! :o :o :o :o

I wouldn't touch any Norwich Union policy with a barge pole after the way they treated my Sister in Law! :o :o

I have business usage on the omega for both myself and my wife through Direct Line.Clearly states that on the policy and covers us both for 30k per annum/hire car etc,and good price.I have had a claim with them several years back and dealt with very promptly,so I would suggest giving them a call.

I have never had a claim, but would also recommend Direct Line for their rates and policies. I just happened to be 'surfing' one night and got a few quotes from them. I then cancelled my existing policies for both my own and my wifes car, and went to Direct Line. Think I saved in the region of £280 for the same cover!

Not that there are many around now but some insurance brokers used to just issued cover notes. I am aware of allegations in the past that premiums were not paid to the companies unless there was an accident.

I must admit, I was guilty of that in the past  ::)
I used to be a contractor for a major company that had many sites.....I used to travel between the sites using my own car if a company car wasnt available......my insurance should of had business use on it......but it didnt  ::) Tho insurance companies dont help themselves.....i carnt remember any time of the few accidents ive had over the years.....that the insurance comp has asked 'what was the purpose of your journey when you had the accident'

In the 4/5 years of being a TD.....ive had one own fault accident.....never got asked did I have passenger on board.....and by them asking that question....would mean, if they checked and i was found to be whats called in the trade 'flying' they wouldnt have to pay out
But they didnt and just coughed up......rightly so in my case....as i wasnt 'flying'.....but youd think they would ask the question  :-/

Sounds a similar idea of the motor trade who sell you a warranty on a used car, they only pay the warranty if the car comes back with a fault.

Yeah, I've always tried to keep Insurance companies informed, so they couldn't duck out in times of trouble. I have "In connection with the policy holder's business"  on the policy.

Mind you I wonder if I should tell them I'll be over in NI for the next 4 months ?. There could be a small clause somewhere.......

Its a minefield,

Ken

Just to be clear - conventional cover is for policyholder and spouse but cover I wanted and was sold was that PLUS business use for ANY NAMED DRIVER. I used to be with Direct Line but they would not give the business cover for 4 drivers. Because the Signum is diesel it is more cost effective to use that Omega. Direct Line have been in touch about why we have moved 3 cars from them but we just cannot take risks on this especially when Elephant will cover.
