Title: Just bought a second hand computer
Post by: Vamps on 07 December 2008, 00:00:06
Our is playing up, needs to get fixed, so in the meantime I bought a secend hand Dell, no cd but came with flat screen etc. works fine on the internet with my dongle. :y I do intend to get out main one sorted so question is, can I buy something that will make this wireless, so that it can go into my daughters room when the main one is sorted?

Edit, only paid £60.00 :y

Agreed. USB ones are not the best.

My one kept dropping its connection and i would have to restart twice to get the damn connection back up. I got so angry with the thing at one time, I ripped it out the computer and threw it across the room  :P

After bending the USB connector back into shape, touch wood, it seems to be ok  :-?

After an internal PCI one though.

The linksys usb one (the blue and black one) I have found to be very good, better than others.

I lot of the PCI ones are actually just a usb bridge and a usb adapter  :-X

I like Linksys actually, might have to try one of theirs then.

Using a Netgear one at the moment. *Shudders*

Netgear routers are awesome but not so for the adapters.

Mike get a PCI wireless card fitted internally - better than usb wireless adaptors.

You may already have an ethernet skt in back of your pc motherboard its a pretty std connection so maybe one there..

Got 2 Linksy black&blue routers ones the old cable connection only other is cables & wifi both have worked great for me there hooked up to my Virgin modem ... "one at a time" :y

Yes, I do, it is plugged into the internet at the mo, while I get our otherone sorted.

Main pc will not connect to the internet ::) It pings, and msn works, ut nothing else and it will not let me load firefox so it is going to a repair person :-[

turn off your firewall and see if it connects then.
I have seen the problem before and it sounds like a winsock issue if its not the firewall, best thing to do is backup anything you want to keep on the pc and reinstall which is cheaper than a repair person to do it :y

This I have found to be pretty reliable to be honest, and would recommend

As to Netgear routers - I tried a DG834 (I think - about 4yr old wirless type), couldn't handle the workload, and had a narrow featureset.  Soon when back to my Siemens routers, and seperate Access Point.

Some really good USB adapters out there - just don't get a Netgear one as they will crash your PC under heavy use!

Couple of things to try before shipping to repair person (Will only take 2 minutes)
If firefox the programme is not loading then this is probably not the fault. If the program is working but will not connect to internet (Page cannot be displayed) then try this (Try this anyway..)
 Open Internet Explorer.
Click tools - Internet options
Click connections tab.
Click Lan Settings button
Ensure every box on this screen is unchecked.
If anything is checked then make a note of what is checked and uncheck them.
Click OK
Click Apply
Press F5 to refresh the screen.

Its a long shot but worth a try.

The 2nd thing I suspect you will have already tried. Reboot your router, I can't tell you how many internet related issue's I have resolved by switching the router off for 15 seconds and rebooting it.

LOL, just noticed, looks like a wiring diag underneath that usb adapter ;D
