Title: Any crash experts here?
Post by: Markie on 01 January 2007, 20:49:41
All

see other post about bad end to year for back ground.

Dad was in an accident yesterday and he is still wrestling with his mind as to what happened.

Understandable when you spin 4 times in the middle of a 7 car pile up in torrential rain  :-[

Its now coming back to him that the car he hit side on ( pug 307) already had side airbag deployed before he hit it...

QUESTION - if the pug had ran into the back of something surley only the front airbag would deploy, with the side airbags only deploying when its hit side on, or do all airbagds deploy when the car is hit with sufficient force?

I believe (excluding curtain airbags in some very new cars), that side bags only deploy in side impact, and front ones only deploy in frontal impacts...

the airbag systems are very smart about impacts, iirc 5th gear crashed a Renult Megane into a parked car at 30mph for real. Only the drivers airbag deployed.. passenger & side airbags did'nt deploy

Newer models also have 'seat occupancy' sensors, and will not deploy airbag unless over a certain weight in the seat...

Hi Mark, sorry to hear about your folks accident, as has already been said, the main thing is they are all ok.
It might be worth contacting a Peuguot dealer to ask about the airbag deployment. Was there any cctv cameras on that stretch of motorway? I'm sure if there was that the police will already be looking at any footage, might be worth a check though.

Cheers Jim

from what i have seen on Road Wars on Sky One, the police investigations into how accidents happen look impressive. No doubt the got statements from all who saw it, I would hope from someone behind your dad too who can comment on what happend.

Sorry Tunnie not this time  :(

Police have let EVERYONE leave the scene, no traffic cops in existance to measue or examine damage - all cars were urged to leave asap. In fact only two cars were still there wen i got there about 30 minutes after the accident.

Police said " we will be in touch"

t%ats :(

we`re looking into that - frankly because we DONT trust the local police to do it - oh and we had to flash the keystone cops before they left the scene as the had left their boot open  ;D

I know the traffic boys and local bobbies get a bad rep. but i'm sure that they would have reg. no's to contact people and this is information they can't give out. Your insurance co. would have more luck with them than you would. And then it would depend if the police were going to prosecute any one especially if it was a genuine accident and not someone being stupid
Just glad no one hurt
Unfortunately your now personally involved in an accident, but if your half a mile down the road stuck  in a traffic jam you would probably be fumming that the old bill should get the cars out of the way and get the traffic moving
They're stuck in no win situation

As has been said elsewhere this is just my opinion and not meant to offend at a time like this
No one hurt but tin can be repaired thats the main thing.

As a general rule, specific airbags only deploy if their sensors are activated meaning a side airbag won't normally go off in a front impact.

My thoughts would be as follows:

If the police did not photograph the scene or obtain all the witness details they must be fairly sure that they will not be pursuing a prosecution against anyone.

This would then mean it is down to the insurance company to sort out what happened. They can request a copy of the accident report from the Police and get all the registration details from then and contact those people directly for their evidence.

When you say your dad is ex traffic cop, how long ago? Recent enough to still have contacts in the accident investigation dept? They will have specific info on each make and model and the airbag deployment process.

Motorway pile ups are a nightmare to sort out as it comes down to order the damage occured etc which is very difficlt without being there to see first hand.

The reason you had such a terrible Police response was that yesterday was a bank holiday requiring any Police Officer on duty to be paid double time for working. All Police Authorities therefore cut the number of staff working back to an absolute minimum. The result is very few Police Officers available (despite highest ever staff numbers) and the very poor service to the unfortunate people involved in yesterdays accident who were clearly badly let down.

So who's to blame. Police, local authority or government.
Somone's gotta go to jail. >:(
