Title: Sound systems - advice needed
Post by: Gaffers on 08 December 2008, 09:22:01
This is one for all the AV techies.  I am looking for a surround sound system 5.1 WITHOUT DVD player (I use the PS3) but it must have optical, digital and RCA inputs. Any suggestions peeps?  ;D

Something along the lines of

plus

http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=TANN-SFX5.1-SIL

Is a reasonable entry level solution.

The following is also very highly regarded

Is it to replace a HiFi as well?

Do you want sub-sat or full range speakers?

Suggest you audition a few to see what you like.

Receiver - Anything decent from Denon, Pioneer, Sony, Yamaha ect
Speakers - Try a few different ones and see which ones work - DO NOT BUY BOSE

VERY over priced.

If it was half the price it would be a contender....but, having installed a few for friends (accountants so know no better) I can say.....they take a HELL of a lot of setup and tweaking but, get it right and they do sound good...but better for cinema than Hifi.

They are OK compared to £50 all in ones but compared to stuff at their own price point - utter joke.

i bought a Yamaha Rx-v363 a couple of weeks ago , it does the job with films but can sound a bit fussy playing Cd's through it. All in all for the price its pretty good  :y

I've had one of these for about 18 months now, very pleased with it.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0006HBCL8/ref=nosim/httpwww4a1cou-21/

Bass from the sub woofer shakes the house, if you want it to, and other speakers are crystal clear quality.

Centre, rear and sub have seperate volume controls.

It has optical and coax outputs, I 've had my sons Xbox 360 connected via the optical lead............unbelievable :y

I also use it for CD's, DVD's and obviously TV, oh and the Wii is also connected.

Highly recommended, by me anyway :y

Err centre over the TV, floorstanders for fronts and my old hifi speakers as rears - all Castle - a closed down British speaker company, the receiver is from when Sony ones were good

I've got a SONY HTSF1300 surround sound system - am pleased with it. I use it occasionally for music but mostly for movies as I have dedicated system for playing my CDs. The Sony is not bad for music compared to what many other people use, but is not as good as a proper Hi-Fi (in my case 10-year-old Denon/Rotel combo).
