Title: A great day at work?
Post by: amigov6 on 13 December 2008, 23:10:56
Yesterday i had to take an empty container to Oldbury (Tat hill or end) for you locals. M6 shut at spaghetti junction, so had to go A38 (Aston Expressway) & cut across through Handsworth. I know our major cities pretty well but everyone else had same idea so i arrived half hour late @ 2.30. Got loaded & decided to head home via M5 J1, M6 north, A460 Cannock, A5 Brownhills, A38, M1, M18, M180...Bingo.
No. When i left a sign said M5 1.5 miles..that took 2.5 hours, total gridlock. Once on M5 flat out all the way. On the A38 nth a mate phoned, told him about delays & joked what else could go wrong? Got onto M180, half hour from home & fuel pump packed up. Phone calls etc. Resulting in recovery, walked in my front door 3.50am yesterday.
Gotta go in tomorrow to lift fridays box & load mondays.

Yes, i WILL book ALL the hours.

Eee, by gum. You call that tough? When I were young we used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife.

;D ;D  ;D ;)

Seriously, though, a hard day and well done. Book the hours!  :y

That place is HUGE! I used to run germany out of Birds when we had their overflow contract (I say we (in the royal sense) that it was DFDS's contract).

I drove for DFDS for a few years but multi dropping out of a tilt & reloading groupage or automotive ie 7 collections in sth wales fri pm all loads to be secured & into Tamworth depot, drop trailer on bay, park up, pick another up from Tamworth to be in Immingham for 0800 hrs saturday, then 2 trailers to shunt to Finlines @ Hull.
65+hrs per week, never home, no wonder trucker "bob off" at the wheel. Happier in my present job!

I started on class 2 multi's from the Brum depot, then got lumbered with the class 1 rolls royce commercial jet castings run. Antrim to Warsaw & return. Home once every 6 weeks for a couple of days if I was lucky. Stuck that for 10 years. Went on the agency after that and ended up at Sainsbury's in Hams Hall (Coleshill). Cushy number that was ;D working permanent nights and home every morning. Now I've got the easiest job in the world :y

I was never a fan of the Frejus tunnel but even less of a fan of going over the top after 'that' fire that closed it  :( I've been off the road nearly 5 years now, the furthest I drive these days (apart from family visiting and holiday runs) is the 2 miles each way to work :y
