I think Mr DTM will be the one to answer this for me but amwilling to accept all comments!!
I've just bought Mrs LD a P reg rover 214 with HG failed for a good price. The repair is no problem for me and I'm quite used to doing them, they used to be bread and butter in the workshop and I was doing 2 or 3 at the same time! :o :o
Anyway, the question is: Is the "Upgraded" HG worth fitting as they weren't about when I was doing them? :-? :-?
And if yes, I assume the Head saver Shim fits between the gasket and the head?
Obviously I'll be getting the head skimmed before re-fitting it... Planning to drop it off tomorrow on the way back from collecting the car! Although I'm not in a desperate rush as it's not taxed so I'll probably put it on the road at the start of January.
Also, does anyone know the torque settings and sequence, just to refresh my memory?
Thanks
-
Upgraded HG's are a lot better along with the shim.
Torque settings are 30nm then 180degrees then another 180 degrees or 15lbsft the tightening order is when stood at front of the car looking at the engine, starting at the left hand side (nearest timing belts)
Left to right back row 9,5,1,3,7 (back row nearest windscreen) Left to right front row 10,6,2,4,8 (front row nearest radiator) :y

Thanks... Thought the first tightening was more than that but now you say it I remember!!
Tightening sequence is as I thought... I'll go with the 2x 180 degrees as I'll be fitting new bolts anyway.
TBH I could probably stick it back together with a cornflakes packet as she only does about 6 miles each way :o ;D ;D ;) ;)

Yep....gasket and head.
The uprated gaskets are better but, dont fix the issue.
New bolts a must.

I know... But I think I got these down to a little over 3 hours start to finish (except the delay for head shim) when I was doing them regularly and actually, of the many different ones I've done, find the K series HG quite a satisfying an easy job!!
And she only does a few miles a day so it'll hardly get up to temp!
It'll get new thermostat, water pump and cam belt kit at the same time so should be good for a few years at her 3-4k per year!!
Do you recommend any particular supplier? I used to use genuine Rover Head Set in the past but they're a bit harder to come by now ::) ::) :-X :-X
-
Oh... Forgot to mention that the head is already off the car as they started to strip it and then the girl bought another car instead of paying for the work! If I weren't so busy this week I reckon I'd have it done by Thurday :y :y
-
the later landrover modified HG is an improvement - far less warranty claims on them.
I put a std pattern on Mrs TB's as it was all I could get quickly, and we needed car back on road.
Always use new bolts, but even more so with the k series - i know there are expensive, but dont skimp.

Would use new bolts on any head TBH... At the end of the day the car only cost £200... Another £100 for parts and it's a cheap car :y :y

Payen are one of the better ones...

Payen are one of the better ones...
Never heard of them!! ::) ::)
-
with payen you get what you pay for and the difference is easily seen when you compare it to the old gasket, i personally used a payen head gasket set on my sister in laws 214 and would reccomend one to anybody,
the biggest problem with the k-series was plastic locating pins breaking , and it is advisable when changing head gasket to fit the uprated metal ones, :y

Get a sneeking suspicion thats what I put on Mrs TB's Rover.... ...maybe JamesV6CDX can remember
-
Car's been delivered today... Trouble is it's an 8 valve and the head has been done before! It looks pretty good engine-wise but body is a bit tatty... Still, for £300 all in and done it's still a good price ;D ;D
Do they do the upgraded head set for the 8 valve engine?

It was a cold, wet January day that is forever etched in my memory. Good fun though :y
Would you believe that is 2yrs ago next month :o

You're right - it was the first time we met if I recall - I think a day after my birthday - and it was a cracking day.
2 years - not an uprated gasket - K series - we must have done the job properly then!
Shall we set a date to change it again? It'll never last much longer... ;D

As she car shares for work now, its only done 20k since (now 92k). She checks the coolant every day (pesky leak somewhere), and oil, and knows the symptoms should it happen again.
Next time we change it, can we change that melted cambelt cover ;D
I love that little car - took it out for a blast the other day, brilliant in the bends, predicatble, handbrake predictable, really nice car to blast around it.

You wanna try the VVC 1.8 version then :y :y

Yeah, that extra 30bhp would make it a better car :y
-
Funny really because if I was after a small hatch a blobby 200 would be high on the list

Just to bring this to the top again for another question...
As it's an 8 valver... Is the torque and sequence still the same (I think it is)?
Can the uprated gasket and shim still be fitted?
TIA

Yes and yes :y

always a good idea to relace the expansion tank cap on them as well

I bought Mrs TMX a 98 Rover 414 Si with a failed HG i replaced it with the upgraded one and the car covered well over 50k with no problems!
i also changed the rad & thermostat as these can be why the gasket fails. was a very very reliable car the only issue was the imobiliser used to play up occasionally
i always thought the K Series lumps were All 16V units!
great engines they will take some stick unfortunatly the Rover 400 doesnt handle! i sold ours and got an Astra CDX that needs a new PAS pump!

K series available as 8v as well, used in metros/100s, some base wedge 200s, and some early bubble 200s. Think the 1.1 was 8v only.
I had a couple of 400 saloons, both diesels, both on her company car lease scheme, so both well ragged :P, never really noticed an issue with the handling - maybe the extra weight at front helped? Had a couple of 416 petrols when ours were in for repair (::)), but I was always chuffeured, as there was some confusion over the insurance for the loan cars, so can't comment on the handling of the petrols.

I always change the thermostat and water pump, along with cam belt kit, as, like you say, thermostat is most common cause of failure. I don't understand why the stat on these seems to always fail CLOSED!!! FFS, it's just ridiculous!
As for the Rad... It'll get a good flush through and then I'll take a view on it. It'll all go back together with cheap oil for 500 miles and good old GM antifreeze, then new VX oil and filter :y :y :y

Her 400 if you go round a bend at hmm more than 50mph things get a little intresting! hers is the 414Si with pokey little 14" alloys! i find it slids about alot! and lots of body roll!
problably find my mrs's is nackered! has done 139k on the same 1.4 engine lol
covered more miles than the Mig!
am waiting for the local motor factors to get in stock the Alternator & PAS drive belts as they are now slipping and the belts look well tired! is there a way of doing it without removing the engine mount?

Ours we had from near new, so the suspension was probably less tired, but ours didn't stuffer excessive body roll, even piling it into the roundabouts. Expected understeer, followed by lift-off oversteer, but nothing unexpected.
