The air bag light has just started coming on in my car just as the MOT is due. :-X
Will it fail MOT for this?
-
No. ;)
Do you have access to a real or 'Cheapo' TechII? Either will tell you what's upsetting the car to put the light on.
I have a 'Cheapo' TechII ;D ;D ;D

Your mileage with cheapo tech2 was better than mine then - I couldn't get it to read the codes for airbag :(, but it was able to clear all stored codes :y
-
Mine tells you the fault as well, or it has so far anyway.
No beating a real tech2 for its live data to really pinpoint the fault though!

The 2 Omegas I've reset the light on had been triggered by knownfaults ....ie ignition back on with airbag system disconnected. On my Astra though, the light was on when I first got the car and my Cheapo diagnosed correctly the passenger side pretensioner 'high resistance' (open circuit), & reset it when I replaced the fubar'd pretensioner.

When I borrowed one, I was using a usb-serial adpater, wonder if that had a bearing on it :-/

My results have been about identical whether using com port in xp, or usb adaptor in vista :-?

Mine was a usb/serial adapter on Tosh 2Ghz P4, and tested against a 1998 car like yours. Tempremental little tinker, isn't it ;D
-
Thats good news then.
Car booked in for MOT on Friday. Assuming all is well I am going to start all the work I need to do ASAP in the new year.
Andy - Am I still ok to borrow your cam lock kit? If so do you fancy having a look at the Air Bag light with your "cheapo" Tech 2 first? ;D

Ohh yes!
Also had great results looking at climate on a vectra-b, but wont touch the omega!
All in all, would not be without that £25 magic box of tricks!

Thought that was one of the things MDTM fixed on his modified version

I should add, for the sake of £20ish, everybody with a compatible laptop should have a cheapo tech2 for their prefacelift Omegas.
OK, we know it has its problems, but if it fixes 1 single issue, such as an airbag light, or clears engine ecu codes so you can see what comes back, then its worth every penny of that £20.
Obviously, at £20, its no match real Tech2, but thats several grand. As long as you are aware of its capabilities and defficencies, its £20 well spent (if you have a laptop with a real com port!!)

That's exactly how I looked at it. When my local dealers are charging c£85 to 'fault diagnose' :o then if your 'Cheapo TechII' works just once to diagnose a fault or reset an airbag light, then it's more than paid for itself. :y

I couldn't agree more! Where do I get one? What is a real com port? :-?

Egay - search for 'tech2' and you'll get loads of chinese stuff delivered for around £20-£30
If your laptop does not have a proper com port (9 pin D type, similar to VGA socket, but only 9 pins, and male instead of female) you're in trouble - USB to serial adapters are too flakey for this device.

hmm ive got an old 98 SE CF27 Toughbook would that be ok with £20 tech 2?

Never tried it under W9x. Additionally, iirc, those CF27's are really slow, not sure they'd have the puff to run it if I am thinking of the right laptop...

How about this TB?

Seems to be directly to USB? :-?

The usb based ones will have a usb to serial interface built in, with all the problems that entains (the cheapo tech2 is flakey on usb to serial adapters (its flakey enough on come port))

Why not a facelift as well :-?
Worked ok on mine.....ok couldnt read certain ecu's (depending on firmware version of ecu) .... but could read engine ecu codes and reset them......including airbag light :y

Seem to recall it was much more limited on facelifts. If it reads 2.2 petrol engine OK though, that will pay for itself :y
-
read engine, and immobilser codes no prob on the old 2.2
-
read engine, and immobilser codes no prob on the old 2.2
Can you remember what else it read?
-
Airbag, Im sure
Wouldnt do climate, gearbox, or anything else I can remember.
Can only recall success with Engine, Airbag, and immobiliser.
-

Will also do g/b ecu.....if its not latest version.....mine could until latest version put on it :(
Also remember it will do climate ecu as well :y

Mine would, so suspect, again, it depends on firmware version :-/
Or if your using real serial port or usb-serial converter :-/
I was using real serial port

the usb one i have works perfectly on g/box, engine, cc, the only thing it wont read is central locking, but thats picked up in ani theft. best £60 i've spent. paid for itself over and over so far with this white elepant i have
