Title: PA Speaker crossover capacitor help
Post by: Phil B on 16 December 2008, 14:52:02
A capacitor has popped in one of the band PA speakers, which is rated at 400W or thereabouts.

The cap is of the electrolytic, looks to be non-polarised, 100V, 15µF, 85°C and 5% tolerance flavour.

I'm having trouble finding one near to it, does anyone have one lying around or know of any good sites I can order one from?

Cheers
Phil

Maplin do a range of polypropylene capacitors that would be better than an electrolytic.  http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=393

Two 8 uf ones in parallel? Rated to 630v.

Failing that, look for motor start capacitors, although not ideal for an audio application they might get you out of trouble.

I will, of course, have a rummage in the junk box later...

Mental block, changing it to polys never occurred to me for some reason, I blame seasonal stress!

Might as well do the stereo pair then I suppose

Thanks Kevin

Yep, might as well replace both. If one electrolytic has died the other won't be in great shape, and polys should be more reliable and sound better.

Should do nicely. :y

I did try Farnell but had trouble whittling the search results down to less than a couple of hundred. Forgot CPC was a little more user friendly.
