What do we think about this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7786825.stm

BBC---Britain is determined to keep the opt-out and will now start talks with EU ministers in an effort to keep it.
Just tell the Eu to bugger off. Then we can rule ourselves ::) ::)

thats cause the french are too rather idle, no way is the govt telling me how many hrs i can work. >:( >:( >:(
-
i only do 31 a week :D
-
This could potentially cause problems for my voluntary occupation (for which I have opted out of the 48h working week, under current legislation).
I work 39hrs a week in my day job as it is :-[

We used to reign over quite a lot of the world at one point, then they kept giving it back.

The sun never set on the British Empire :) :)
I wouldn't go back to working 48 or more on a regular basis, though a little over time's ok :y
We as a nation spend way too much time at work & not enough with our family & so they're suffering as a result :( :(
-
Depends what you call 'working'. My wife 'works' about 13 hours a day, at work, at home, wherever she goes with her mobile. On her payslip it says 35 hours.
-
48 hours...blimey thats part time....in fact ive done a single shift longer than that. ::) ;D
60 hours per week is minimum for me...used too do anywhere from 75 hrs through too 87 hours. :)
Mind you i dont work as such...just go too work and play poker or sleep and general doss about. ;D
-
If i were to work only 48 hrs i would be in danger of losing my house & i doubt the company would survive in what's already hard times.
Reasons given were, work & family life balance. Ok. There's a point to be made in as much as Dad's never here etc. & strong family units are important. Personally my family have grown up & are making their own way (I started early, get it out of the way!!!) So no problem there.
2nd, Health. At a guess this idea was dreamed up by office folk for office folk who have to take work home & be on the end of the dooberry 24/7. Of course that's not healthy but we all choose our careers. I might "work" 15 hrs in one day but i've got a bed, telly, lappy, fridge, kettle, cab heater with me everywhere i go & use them at least half of every shift. I sometimes lock the cab up & go for walk while being loaded, use of showers if i'm not gonna make it home, so where's the stress or ill health?
I don't profess to know these beaurocrats so called careers or what they entail so how can they possibly know ours? THEY DON'T.
So leave us alone to make our own choices & try using your working hours doing something a little more constructive.

4-8 hour week sounds far better ;D ;D ;D
-
a 48 hour week would be a novelty to me ::) 65+ every week, and paid for 40 ish :(

Eh? Crazy comes to mind I'm afraid :o
-
I get paid to do a job (salaried).....work 48 hours most weeks and that does not include the 10 hours of commute.
-
There are loads of them where I work who would be deep in the doo doo if hey couldn't work overtime. Live to work rather than work to live. They'd live there if they could.
-
Just to clarify, the working time directive has never covered paid overtime for example if you do 5 hours overtime and paid for it then that is up to you. The 48 hour week max is to cover normal working hours for your normal salary.
It does not stop you doing paid overtime.

No normal salary or overtime. I'm paid a flat hourly rate regardless.
If i still wanted to be a family man losing the family home would be a lot more stressfull to all concerned than putting a few extra hours in to balance the books, put a roof over thier heads & food on the table.
Infinate wisdom my arse. Why do certain condescending folk think they know better?
Do i tell veggies to eat meat?
Do i tell non smokers to take the mucky habit up? NO. I don't. I leave folk to decide for themselves so it would be nice to be afforded the same privilege if that's not too much to ask.
