Anyone thinking of going this year?
I am going on my Euro road trip with a mate from July to September, very tempted to do S2N 2007 as well....
Not sure if i will have enough time to prep a car by myself (my euro car will be in better nick than the S2N banger ;)
Does anyone want to team up and take a Senny or something? - Really quite fancy doing a run like this.
Here is a link for you to browse:

I will be very suprised if S2N (and the others) are not already fully booked up. :(
I would like to do t, but I am still paying for last years!
Highly recommended though! ;)
-
my problem is i would have just come back from 2 months of driving around Europe! Not going to have time to prep a car :(
-
I would love to do another one......think S2N, H2R adn Chezkwrecks is fully booked though.

Very tempted myself, but slightly concerned that I wouldn't have a Marks_DTM to fix my wreck when it breaks... ::)

Make sure he's entered, then tailgate him all the way..... ;)

Idealy you need 4 people to spread the work load, cost and driving.

In one car?

Yes, hence big rear wheel drive car.............

There are still places left on all the StreetSafari rally's this year at time of writing.
I won't be doing one this year due to the imminent arrival of the latest addition to our family and other things, but I'll be doing one in 2008 providing there're no major disaster between now and then.
On S2n me and my two mates chomped through around £100 a day, and that's not including getting the car ready, but then we weren't really watching the pennies. It can be done really cheap if you're prudent, you might even want to consider camping to keep costs down.
I'd recommend three as a team in a large car is comfortable. (There were two guys did S2N in a Mini last year, I'm amazed they didn't go stir crazy!!)
I quite fancy the BA/BE (New York to New Orleans) rally, but that's might be a bit out of the question.
Shame I didn't still have the BatMobile, It could be the club rally car!! ;D

To be honest Big Rod, I fancy trying a different company, Justins organisation on Chezk Wrecks was piss poor and he offered zero help to some people who were just looking for some advice from somebody with experience (i.e. how do I scrap my car that has just broken down in Annecy).

Yes....the scally rally is a different crew and much more biased towards charity....looks a very good route to.

Just reading route now... ...good brakes reqd for those passes!
-
You dont use brakes (unless your a poor driver), you use engine braking with a short dab of brakes........it doesn't matter how good your brakes are or if its auto or manual.....you will cook them unless you use engine braking.

Us old(ish) timers may do that, but they teach kids to slow down on brakes now, not gears....
Even using gears, them brakes are still going to get a good workout down those sort of slopes ;)
-
I think Mark used the brakes once coming down Stelvio, and that was for the suicidal biker! ;D
Impressive piece of driving considering it was an auto!
Others though, relied on the brakes rather more.... and paid the price!

Indeed they do, I picked a habbit up from my dad when he had a manual. Going though the gears as you approach a round about.
So doing 70 in 5th, i'd use a combination of pedal breaking and engine breaking. I got told off for doing this, i was told leave it in 5th until you are at the roundabout! ::) Then select the gear needed, in other words use NO engine braking.

Thats crap teaching........it is interesting seeing a stream of cars with smoking brakes and grease running out the wheel bearings!

That how BSM taught my son. They tell 'em "brakes are for stopping & gearboxes are for changing gear with". Not what I do though even with an auto.
-
I know it is daft, but that is the way you have to teach them nowadays.
I was talking to Fin about this, and if you go down through the gears, they mark you down!
Weird... I was taught, use the gears so you have the brakes if you really need them!
-
Very rarely use brakes down steep hills even with an auto.
-
Don't want to sound / appear thick but how can you not use brakes going down a hill in an Auto? I tried this out and whilst the box changed up a gear, the braking effect did not seem to be enough. Unless, of course, I just bottled it!
I was always taught brakes are for stopping (took my test 1992). I guess that on regular roads this is fine - it is just more challenging situations that require a different approach.
-
I always use the gears to slow down in a manual, force of habit.
I may be interested - what is the approx cost per head?

Its the current way for some daft reason.
I asked one of the kids at work, turns out its because modern brakes are better, brakes are cheaper than gearboxes, and it brings on the brake lights every time you slow down.
I say 'dangle berries' :-X

I can KIND OF see the point. I'd rather change the Omega's front pads than an autobox...
Although on the other side of the argument, brake lights being constantly on, mean that if for any reason you suddenly have to brake hard, the tailgaiting twit behind won't see any lights "come on" as a warning, and will plough straight into your rear end :)

The g/boxes are strong enough, and many cars still have underated brakes (I include our Rover 25). I don't really buy the brakelight tosh either - should be more aware of situation than to have to be warned by brakelights
-
Again Jaime, I totally agree that everyone should be aware of keeping a safe distance....
But you and I and everyone else here... knows that 80% or motorists are tailgaiting bastards that aren't aware of the nose on the front of their face :D
So unfortunately we need to make allowances for them, in order to increase our own safety...

something to bare in mind when i go around Europe.
I was surprised when TB said i can boil my break fluid!!! Breaking using the autobox was something i never considered, and tbh had not seen action until in TB's MV6 on the way to Northampton.
I can see their point about brake lights, however when i was told off i pointed out, what if the brakes failed?? Drums exploded, no fluid, you need to know how to brake the car using the gears. My BSM bod just shrugged it off.

......

because as has been debated by those elected by us, we are taught to pass our driving test. Actual driving comes with years of practice/experience
-
No car can stand a mountain pass by using the brakes alone......

Sports mode switch will change down into third.
Additional braking - engage second.
Extreme braking - engage first.

I have managed to drive a car a couple of miles using engine braking and hand brake on one wheel - a drum had burst and popped a cylinder.
Managed to get bits and fix at end of journey before going home, long gaps and being carefull

[smiley=embarassed.gif] OK yes, I was being thick and it is obvious when you think about it. In fact, thinking about it (and feeling even more embarrassed [smiley=embarassed.gif] [smiley=embarassed.gif] [smiley=embarassed.gif]) I used this myself descending a steep hill in Devon last year.........
So apologies for asking a stupid question!!
