Don't know if this has been posted before (apologies if it has), but this is a great video of the Vulcan at Waddington in July 08. That rate of climb after rotation is just breathtaking... :y

Sorry Nickbat, but where abouts on this site is the Vulcan video please? :-? ;)

Nice :y
Typical Vulcan take off, nice tail chase with the Lanc 8-)
Last time I saw those bomb doors open it said farewell inside

No I have not thanks Nickbat! I am clicking all over the site, even where it mentions "vulcan", but not finding any video of it! ::) ::) ::)

Yes I obviously know that! ::) ::) ::)
I get to the first page and where to from there? :-?

Amazing, the rate of climb is almost up with the Lightning, damn close :y
Britain designed and built some amazing aircraft, shame the whitehall bunch didn't support the aviation industry. :'(
Another brilliant british aircraft was the de Havilland Mosquito, made partially from laminated ply. One of the companies building the front was Parker Knoll, the chair manufacturer ;D.
It was very fast; the spitfire and hurricane had one Rolls Royce engine, it had 2 :y :y
yet another example of brilliant engineering.

Two things worthy of note about XH558 in its current guise.
1) Its a lot lighter then she was under RAF days, gone are loads of wiring, all the radar systems, electronic counter measures and a whole host of other bits
2) During 2008 they have not been 'pushing her'......so in that shot whe wont have been on 100% throittle by any means
There was a comment on the TVOC site from some of the techies who have re-built her (in particular one of the sooties) that her power to weight is now such that in theory she could achieve true vertical flight!
How true this is I guess is questionable.
I do remember during the final stages of the major service them having major problems getting her all balanced and had to add some 'red slab' radar to the nose (a bloody great lump of steel!) in order to replace some lost weight!

Thanks Nickbat that has worked!
I have just spent some considerable time watching these lovely machines and getting very emotional remembering my childhood back to the Farnborough Air Show in 1959, to Malta during 1962-64 seeing them there constantly, then at airshows and on film since then. Many happy and very sad memories associated with this aircraft. :'( :'( :'( 8-) 8-) 8-) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
The men who flew them were gorgeous too! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* ;)

does anyone know what happened to XH607, was it scrapped? :( :'(
-
She was "gate guard" at Waddington for some while .. if its not there now I've no idea .. :(

You mean XM607....which is still at waddington:

Apparently there's also XM655 at Wellesbourne Mountford, wherever that is (!), and it was doing high speed taxi runs as recently as June 2006.

Like the way it sets off the car alarms! ;D

Yep, still does the fast Taxis at Wellsbourne (just south of Warwick).
She is unusual as she has the more powerful 301 engines fitted!

Could she ever get a certificate of airworthiness or is she destined to live out her days running up and down the strip?
-
Much bigger job and more cash then required to get XH558 up!
Plus, the lack of servicable 301 power plants will be BIG issue. XH558 had the 8 last 0 time 201 engines which is a key thing that got her back in the air and will be the one thing that will ground her again.
And Rolls Royce (Bristol) will not , service or re-build them.

Why not?
Good PR I'd say

Many reasons we are told....
1) They no longer have the expertise
2) They no longer have the tooling
3) They no longer have the parts.
The best they can do is offer an inspection to assess the condition and as a result extend the flying hours (they are actualy rated in cycles)

Hmm same issues as a Diesel loco preservationists are getting, staff retired companies, shut down, limited spares

Should be able to re-furb and re-make most items of a diesel unit though.
Even if you could get the parts made for a 201 or 301.....without Rolls Royce underwriting thier use then you cant use them for flight sadly....and they wont do that unless they made them

That is pretty bad really - especially as RR are supposed to like their heritage (or is it because it is Bristol)
-
I would simply love to see again three Vulcans taking off together and flying in formation! :-* :-* :-* :-* ;)
We have achieved the "impossible" in railway preservation, so why not in aviation! :-? :-? ;)

Lol, possibly because trains dont have a minimum (reasonable) speed and also have a low risk of falling out the sky and hitting things.... :y
-
Fantastic video.......fabulous plane....

Lol, possibly because trains dont have a minimum (reasonable) speed and also have a low risk of falling out the sky and hitting things.... :y
I also doubt even the biggest of the diesel locos could burn 10,000 Lbs of fuel in an hour!

According to google it says 10,000 lb is about 5 short tons??
So what a train burns in a day, take a Vulcan just 1 hour, and thats empty, fully loaded can burn 13,500 lbs an hour!

That's what I was joking about Tunnie, that a steam engine takes all day to burn 5 tons of coal; just a comparison as the mention of diesel railway engines had been made. 8-) 8-) ::) ::) ::) ;D ;)
I cannot leave steam engines out of a discussion on railway engines! ;D ;D ;)

stick some 593s in there !

OH DEAR DAMN IT, NO RUN AND HIDES SMILIE

its a plane
It's a plane that was built for a specific purpose (hence has earned it's place in the history books) and showed the true brilliance of British Engineering. It also spearheaded the development of certain other planes that also now have a place in history.

Exactly the reason why the Vulcan went out of service when ICBMs appeared. It had no job to do. And why that lumbering old crate from the same era the B52 lives on!

A quote from Sir Sydney Camm :
"All modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics. TSR.2 simply got the first three right."

ken tsr2 got the first 3 very right, some one took a very big back hander!
