I've only 1Gb RAM on my machine and would like to increase it. I have an Asus M2N-MX XE mobo, with two DDR2 sockets (only one populated at the moment).
I fancy going to 4Gb (I think Santa's bringing me Flight Simulator X at Christmas!), but can the mobo and XP Pro take it? The seems to be some doubt. Should I just get another 1Gb stick?
Any advice warmly received. :y

get the board manual down from asus.
That will tell you the max size, there may also be bios updates needed to support higher capacities.
I have just done similar and taken mine to 3gb
Ohhh, and DDR2 isnt as cheap as some out there, not that much of it about any more.

Thanks for that. :y
The board manual says max 2Gb, but a number of places say it can take 4Gb. In fact, I'm not the only one who has got confused, as you can read here:

It was probably 2 gig when designed, but a bios update will allow 4.

Windows will still only use a maximum of 2gb per app though, and only utilise a maximum of 3.5gb
you need to also set the /3GB flag in your boot.ini

Think I'll stick to getting 1Gb. However, the stick I have in now is 667Mhz, so as the mobo can take up to 800, it may be worth getting a new 2Gb 800 stick, as I don't think it's good to have two different sticks on the board.

Ouch, thats expensive!
32bit Windows can only access 4G RAM (ignoring server style PAE extensions not supported on desktop), and internally, the NT kernel allocates 2G to kernel, and 2G to each application space.
As PC architecture needs memory holes, really only about 3-3.5G is usable, so 4G not worth the effort. 64bit Windows overcomes this, but introduces a whole load of other hurdles).
As the kernel uses bugger all, the boot.ini mod suggested by PaulW is worthwhile on machines with more than 2.5Gb

Tried my Asus with 4gb wouldnt even boot ! using Xp pro have tried it with 3gb in but get similar results with just 2gb in, as they operate in dual channel if you use only 2 of the matching coloured slots ...So 2gb is fine best use 2 x 1gb as no gain paying for another gig of ram imo :y

late answer sorry..
both rams will work at the same frequency which will be the slowest spec of the two..

I tell a lie (a small one! ;)), the stick was £17.00 + delivery.

I thought it would be wise to get branded memory and Kingston are supposed to be good. Dunno what all that "HyperX DDR2" means though. Guess I'll find out soon though as it's already been shipped. :y

Cheers, Iain. I issued to have a superb FS2004 setup, complete with loads of AI traffic and heaps of other bits downloaded from avsim and elsewhere. Then my HDD fried and I lost it all. :'( When I tried to reinstall, the world.cab was corrupted on Disk 4 and that was that. I've have missed it (though it took up too much time) and I spotted my chance to go flying again when asked what I wanted for Christmas! :y
I take it you're a serious simmer (especially having read your avatar - that's a simmer's life: bed>fly>bed) . :P

The memory for the replacement OOF server I ordered from Crucial on Monday, using their free delivery, turned up on Wednesday. OK, it cost £40, but thats pretty competitive for 2 x 2G DDR2-6400 ECC modules.

my work pc (XP) was recently upgraded from 2gb to 4gb and all hell broke loose, everything was freezing and locking up so we took a stick out and it ran perfectly with 3gb ::)
