Title: I've been very, very stupid - My Mig is now bad
Post by: Albatross on 22 December 2008, 21:30:06
I went and had a test drive of this today...

Black VXR8 (http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VAUXHALL+VXR8/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-240-4294957196-4294966969/advert.action?R=200845322780879&distance=10&postcode=MK41+0RZ&channel=CARS&make=VAUXHALL&model=VXR8&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=2007&vehicleRegLetter=07)

Now I've gone off my Mig. It felt crap getting back into it. What have I done?

Three things have sold it to me and all of them are complete surprises, I expected to go out and drive an uncomforatable monster car.

1. It was as comfortable as my Elite (immaculate with brand new MV6 suspension) and at least as big inside including the rear legroom.
2. Driving it around town at 30 miles an hour felt like a very manageable and civilised (slient) car.
3. The fuel economy was as good, if not even slightly better, than my 3.2. (1300rpm @ 70mph!)

As for when you open it up it is just simply awesome!

I really liked the black as it made it look a little more subtle in that the black trim around the fog lights and under the radiator didn't stand out like dog's balls.

£22,500 is a bit steep right now, but I turn 40 in 15 months and the prices may have dropped a little. I think I've just found my "big four oh" Birthday present. ;D

Don't worry Debs, I think I'd keep the Miggy, especially if I spend the money on tuning the engine and the cosmetics that are due this winter (don't worry they're very subtle) as it will never sell for what it owes me.

Mind you I don't know how often I'd actually drive it if I had the choice of that or the VXR8 on the drive. I have a Pug306 D-Turbo on the drive to that is in mint condition, but I never get in it other than to give her a monthly run to keep her ticking. She's mainly for taking the bikes (mountain) up North, or to Wales near you, when I need to.

They are lovely cars and nothing can beat a V8.In NZ and Australia they have a big cult following and have done for a number of years.
I feel like taking one for a test drive already. I have passed the 40 mark.

I too like the VXR8 - our local dealer lent me one for  a weekend - very impressed.  I propose to have it as my only 'everyday' car.

I'm just waitng for the prices to drop further :-)

Yeah, I drove two of those today too. The standard Monaro was horrible IMHO and the Monaro VXR, whilst it had the oomph, had no class and was horrible.

I wouldn't change my Omega for a Monaro now that I've seen the difference. Now a VXR8, that's a different kettle of fish altogether.

Ironically enough Kate, this is the Monaro 5.7 litre that I drove today..

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VAUXHALL+MONARO/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-240-4294956291-4294966969/advert.action?R=200845322690866&distance=10&postcode=MK41+0RZ&channel=CARS&make=VAUXHALL&model=MONARO&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=2005&vehicleRegLetter=55

Exactly the same colour; it is a really hideous yellow. I don't mind yellow cars with a nice paint tone, but this colour is just the same as the old BT vans used to be. Really looks dated and cheap.

Even more ironically, I come from around Kyle of lochalsh originally and I know that car from Kyleakin. It is not a great example. And just a little tip NEVER buy a car from the West Highlands of Scotland; the salt in the air wrecks the bodywork and chassis very quickly. That car on your link will have aged 4 years for every one down here.

Fair comment, having driving neither of them I am in no place to comment.

Based on looks alone, I think the VXR8 looks far too American like the current Ford muscle cars.

Forget the Monaro, for the same price you can get a  HSV GTS-R  (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/760236.htm)

Same engine and running gear with 4 door practicallity (but possibly not with that colour leather!!).

actually nowadays most v8 older than 5-6 years are cheapo..

when budget become available will think of them as a replacement for

miggy..but will keep a real 4 pot as a daily backup.. personally dont

trust the oil price drop ..now its down, but who knows what will happen

later..

you could get alot of power out of them too if your only going to have them run mostly on 4 cylinders... you'd get rly bad neckache when you planted it mind :P
