Why are modern rally cars much less powerful.

Is it something to do with the safety aspects. :-*

The FIA said that the Group B cars were geting so quick that they were getting as quick as an F1 car on gravel. The safety of spectators and drivers was paramount

so they were BANNED. and capacity limited to 2000 and also BHP limited. even the 1 off specials have now been banned Now due to the economic climate, Subaru have quit WRC and i'm sure others will follow.

I was also 1 of the lucky few to Marshall on the Lombard RAC Rally. The only Rally in the calander that was driven BLIND (NO PACE NOTES)  from 1982 to 1986 and was one of the few to see these SUPERBLY engineered cars drived through the Welsh forests and Keilder in anger

I was living in Kent at the time and took my Mk ll Escort to Chester, Bath, Harrogate etc for the starts and then drove approx 1500 miles around the country driving the stages to get to our marshall posts.
Some of the best driving experiences I've ever had .
Forest of Dean, Kielder, Epynt, The Lakes etc.

Not in the way the Rally of GB is run now.

Scrutineering on the Friday
Start and the Mickey Mouse Stages on the Saturday and Sunday
Then the Rally Proper Monday to Thursday
Day and Night Stages
Prize Giving on the Friday

Not Start on Friday and End on Sunday  as it is now :( :( :(

The good old days eh!

I went to watch the lombard thorough the Clumer park Stages arround 82/3.  2 of the bosses sons had cars competing (Chevette HS and Escort BDG)  The BDG went on to win its class in one of the years.

As far as I know one of them continued rallying for a while and had an Ascona 400 then a 6R4.  The other brother who won in the BDG still gets involved in motoersport from what I gather.

When I find the pics I will try and scan them and post them.

I still have my Grandstand video collection from over 30 years ago of
Stig Blomqvist driving the Lotus Sunbeam.  Tony Pond in the HSR.  Then along came the 4WD stuff and just blew me away.  Those chattering Auddi Turbo.s and flame thrower exhasts.

I think I got a picture of the 911 SC, and on one of the vids I have footage of a BMW M1SE ralling as well.

The quattro ruined rallying for me......before the arrival of it it was tail end out action and full chat whistling carbs....after it seemed so much more sedate and quiet

Seems such a pity that the fire breathing group B cars of 20 years ago have been banned.....................seems like we need to be protected from everything these days .

Like 'dangle berries' we do . :( :( :y :y

not your actual rallying but still a classic - Ari Vatanen climbing Pikes Peak in a Peugeot 405 T16 (skip the first minute it's artistic drivel ;))

ps
Skruntie how do you post you-tube vids with the preview rather than just a link? :-?

thanks for the vids, my my they bring back memories. and hunting through youtube for more is so much fun! just enjoying 'marvdogger' s rise and fall of Group B vids...lots of parts!

my memories of early rallying include the time the RAC came to Sutton Park (north birmingham - no idea what year!!). i distinctly remember the water splash ( a tiny ford!) and a porsche going the wrong way at a crossroads!

And the time my stepbrother Gary Wilson let me sit in the back of his rallying mk2 escort while we went for a ride around the roads of scotland! I have no idea what spec it was, or what league he was in. i just remember 'that rally car' and being allowed in the back to hold onto the roll cage!! His brother had a standard spec mk3 RS Turbo at the time, much quieter and safer but very exciting all the same!

good times..

not quite the same but at school in design in 1991 my mate made a normal MG metro into a 6R4 look-a-like. then decided it was too slow and put a 1.9 205 GTi engine in it. then in 1992 decided it was too slow again and put a 3.5 V8 in the back!  ;D ;D

Bit of as stupid comment that, bearing in mind they were banned because they were too fast and the crowds were uncontrolled so one ended up making a tiny mistake ploughed into the crowd and killed a few, hence why thet were banned.

Tony Pond at the time agreed they were too dangerous, so yes we do need protecting!!

I bought many years ago the video Genesis to Revalation the story of the 6R4, really good vid, gutted its now worn out, haven't been able to get it on DVD

Will Gollop had a twin turbo rally cross version that would out accellerate the F1 cars of the time to 60!!
