Title: Had a Guitar...
Post by: Darth Loo-knee on 28 December 2008, 17:03:21
And my bloody fingers and hand are aching off.... ;D

I was up until 2 am last night trying to get these cords right, I could no longer push the strings so packed it in for the night..

I have had a Strat copy Guitar from a local music shop, which came with a practise amp, bag, stand etc for £99.

Youtube seems to be pretty good to get a few lessons :y

Thanks Guys and Gals for all your help with trying to pick out on.

It wil take a little while for your fingers to harden up, but they will, if you continue to practise !. A practise every day will soon get your wrist loosened up. What's the action like, eg whats the gap between the 12th fret and the strings ?.

it's ok lowering the action but you can end up with string rattle on certain frets if set up incorrectly!

You've done right getting a starter kit to scratch about on & see how you go. No need for a 1200 Bandit as your first bike mate!!!
Lots of help & chord charts free online so happy strumming! Guy. :y

Thats prob not too bad for starting off, my Eggle is currently at 2mm. As had been said, the lower the action the less you have to push down the string to get the note to sound cleanly, however if too low, and you pluck hard the string will hit other frets so buzz.  There is plenty of info on the web, eg http://mediawebsource.com/guitar/setup.htm so you can adjust the guitar to suit you  :y

Are we having an OOF group at the next meeting ?

Actually, as you have a Strat, there is one tune you should learn to play, Sabre Dance. Here's a guy playing it so you can pick up some tips ! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vQ4-iEn4a_8

I am wondering if i should try and lower the strings at the bridge end just a little to see what happens then.

Been practicing the major cords, then trying to play Wonderwall, tried tying a shoe lace around the neck on the second fret, sounded far more like it then so i will drop on one off those Capo's  :y

Had another couple of hours at it so finger ends are in bits again ;D

No, chill mate, you will get fed up if you keep ruining your fingers. Like sun tans, start off gentle then work up. 15mins chord bashing per day max practise, then a bit of of gentle noodling, experimenting, try moving the bridge up and down, you can't ruin it, but see what it feels/sounds like. That way you are learning more about how to get it to suit you. After a week, your fingers will have toughened up and you can practise for longer. Worst thing is to go at it for hours for several days at the begining. You will get fed up of the pain and ditch it.  :'(

Enjoy it, try the old basic easy tunes (anything by Oasis should fit !), even try the lead line from that Sabre Dance tune, its not difficult. And play at a speed to suit you, not the original.

Have fun, that's what its all about.

Haha... You better than me then!  :y ;)

I’ve got an electric guitar... cant do anything with it hardly, so its collecting dust at the moment!

Got a Bass too (got it with the electric guitar), I can do basic stuff on that! However I seem to get so far with it, then hit a limit where I don’t seem to get better, so I then get bored! The bass had a coat of dust on it the other day, so I decided to make some noise practice again. (Which reminds me, I need to fix my bass amp so I can drive my parents crazy play it without using headphones!)

I also had a mad moment about 9 months ago, where I bid on a drum kit on ebay, and won it! Mum and Dad still keep having a go at me, and tell me to sell it every other week!
Again, I can do some basic stuff on it, and keep having a bash on it every other day - but I seem to have hit a wall with it and don’t seem to be getting any better  :(

Maybe I should dig the keyboard out of the loft and give that ago again!  ;D :-?

I found tapping my finger tips on the guitar body between playing also helps a bit :)

Cheers mate,

Its an ashdown bass amp. Same as this:

Works fine (or did!) - but the bulb went in the UV meter, so I took it to bits so I could replace it... I did find a replacement bulb (about a year ago) but never ordered it, and its still in bits now!

Do you know what voltage the bulb is? I seem to think it was about 6-7v ish?  :y

If it's the model I think it is the lamp runs on 15v

Ah right. Could be. I dont think it was a standard voltage IIRC (ie 6/12v). I do know that there is a 15v supply to the front PCB, so it could be (-15, Gnd , +15). Will Stick the meter on it one day.

I've just put it all back together (had the front PCB out, so had to solder on 5 wires - dead easy!) And ive found all the knobs, washers and nuts too which is unbelivable! :y

All back up and running again, minus a back light... meh!
