Here is the score. My car insurance starts on the Pug, on 6th Jan 09.
It needs taxing. I have the insurance certificate, stating insurance starts on 6th Jan.
Question is - can I use this to tax it, before the 6th Jan? Or must I wait till the 6th?
Cheers :y
-
Unfortunately you'll have to wait 'till the 6th... The car isn't currently insured!! ::) ::)

Actually it is - but, only with a temporary, Dayinsure Policy - therefore not able to use that to tax it... :(

Cheers Broocie - that'll save me queueing in the post office for all my lunch break, to be told the same thing ;D
-
dont you have a traders licence for your mobile mechanic business?
-
i suppose you could chance your luck on getting served by an idiot at the post office who might fail to pay attention to the date on the policy cover note! But it would be a naughty thing to do
-

Not sure quite what you mean.
My car insurance covers me for using the car in connection for my business.
My business insurance covers me for liability and public indemnity.
Not sure how either of these could help me tax a car - also I'm not sure of this licence you speak of? :-/
-
thought you may have a motor traders lience, although you are probably excempt not to sure, but if you did have it you could tax any vehicle at any time
-
id be tempted to just go and try it. chances are post office will just have a quick look at documents, they never checked mine last time. worth a try. ;)

If you did "get away" with that you would still be driving the car on a public road uninsured. ;) That is not recommended! :o :o

Can it be done via the post? You wouldn't actually get the disc till the 6th even if you paid for it now ...... just an idea. ;)

Just wait until the 6th. Impetuous youth.

Think he means Trade Plates - They allow you to drive untaxed cars I believe.

If that is the case then why bother before the 6th?? :-? :-? ;)
To tax it before you can drive it makes little sense to me! ::) ::) ::)
-
i think what he wants to do is tax it so then he can use it on the 6th rather than have to walk/ bus it then get back to the car before he can use it when he could just use it to have done the journey if he'd had it taxed even a day early.
could try it online or over the phone so you get it for the 6th to save going to the post office?

Really dont think that will work, to be honest.... Have nicked folks for similar in the past.... :-X

i am going through the same problem at the moment too. my new motor insurance dont start till tomorrow and i need to get tax tomorrow but the cover note has been posted to my house and the car and me are at my mothers..... :-[
james ring the dvla tax and they can do it over the phone as long as you have a policy number!
-
Why start insurance on Tuesday when you need the car now, insure it from 2nd and problem over......... ::)

The car is, at the moment, comprehensively insured under a temp Policy. The permanent policy starts on the 6th Jan.
I'm not using it on a public road without Tax - I won't drive it away from the dealer until it can be taxed.
What are the grounds for arrest here?
In UK, we also have to give a reason for arrest. I can't see our custody sarge settling for a "prompt and effective investigation" for no car tax ::)
::)
By the way, sorry if i've misunderstood..

In Englandshire, it appears that folk can get arrested at the roadside the -de-arrested- and allowed to drive away. Up here, you only get arrested for doing something serious. Driving without tax or uninsured before the date on the policy gets a nicking a.k.a. a ticket.... ;)

Cheers B - when you say a ticket, do you mean by a nicking, that they do not get taken back to custody and interviewed under caution?
(Sorry to ask, I get a little confused over the difference in scootlandshire ;) )
Cheers

A ticket as in nicked for speeding/tax/insurance/whatever.
Arrested means processed at the Office with either an appearance from custody or bailed and required to appear....
England has a funny habit of arresting folks at the roadside, charging them, then releasing them again without the 'prisoners' ever seing the inside of a custody suite. Most strange..... ::)

As far as I'm aware, the only times that would happen would be for things like cannabis - Eg, arrest, interview in car, give street caution, then de-arrest, and matter sorted.
The only other thing I know of is arresting for Breach of Peace, and then dearresting when the threat to BoP has passed.
If someone has something such as no tax, or not carrying documents, they will be cautioned, but not arrested if there is a better method of disposal (Such as HO/RT1 or VDRS)...
Forgive me if i'm missing something - I know I yet have a lot to take in :y

Scots Law is not constrainedf by PACE and uses Common Law for things like Murder, theft, etc which are not Parliamentary offences.
Ask the staff at your next training session and they will look at you as thjough you have three heads.... English law does not cover the whole of the UK.... :y

Thanks B. I was aware this was the case, just not sure where all the differences are.
As far as I know, our powers are only for England, Wales and adjoining waters (not Scotland!), so hopefully I won't need to understand the differences in huge detail ::)

Driving without tax and/or insurance is the same throughout the UK though.... ;) :-X

In Scotland then, can you arrest and take to custody for driving without tax?
We just issue a form, and let DVLA sort it as a civil matter...

Form CLE2/5s. No arrest.
No tax is usually your starter for 10 for no insurance as well, if you did deep enough....
enough already... dont drive the car without docs as a nicking will really p!ss on your Special campfire.... ;)

I have no intention at all of driving without Docs. If (despite the fact the vehicle is comprehensively insured) I can't tax it yet, then it will just have to wait ;)
I'm purely just interested in the differences between Scotland and E/Wales, based on what I've seen here :y

No wait until the 6th :y

Is it currently SORN'd ?. It would be a pain if you got a fine because of that.
The whole thing is a nightmare. When they said road fund was going to go up, and my current tax finished the month after, I was trying to work out how to cancel my existing tax a month early and get a new disc, without having it on the road untaxed, eg the tax would have been paid, but I might not have had the disc to display. ::)

That's a very valid point Ken; you mean that at the end of December, like NOW, DVLA will expect to see the vehicle taxed, if not SORN'd, and could issue an automatic penalty before James taxes it on the 6th. ;) ;)
Indeed the DVLA are far more vigilant now than the old days when you could leave taxing a week or two if funds were low and get away with it. With technology now centrally at DVLA, and of course in Traffic Police cars, they are right on top of who is taxed and who is not at any given time! ;) They are apparently pushing out £80 penalty notices very quickly! :'( :'(

James did say its insured on Daysure. What are the restrictions in insurance for road fund ?. Does it have to last for a certain period of time?. Theroretically if James went in with a Daysure certificate, at the time of application, the vehicle is insured, so he should be able to get his road fund disc. I know in the past we have been able to get insurance with only a 30 day cover note. They used to want to see the policy doc, not a photocopy, but I think they go by being told by their computer that its insured, so if Daysure have logged this fact then it should work......... Shouldn't it ??????????????
Blumin' computers, far better off wit out 'em ;D ;D ;D
