Pete Elite is coming to pick up the steering column on Monday, he has a Senator without a use which has got me thinking.
Most of you know I am going around Europe in the summer, its been pointed out which ever car i get I should run it for a while to make sure its reliable. After all i want it breaking down in the UK on the M40 rather than in the Swiss Alps!
Pete's senny is the 24v one (only version i'd have) - Its been stood still for 3 years! :o
However mentioned in another thread they are easier to work on than the Omega, so i should be laughing!!
Only real problem is the rear arches, what would I be looking at to get those sorted?
Whats interesting is i did an insurance quote in my name on a 1991 3.0 24V Senny Auto, came out at £340 fully comp! :o Which aint bad.
Any thoughts suggestions on a Senny thats not moved in 3 years?

Have the brakes seized and how regular has it been started :question
Wonder what the petrol is like in the tank after standing for 3yrs :-/

Not sure on that, bet the petrol is very old!
Just started this thread really to get some ideas, and what to look for.
Although he did say a fuel pipe had a leak, so i doubt there is much fuel in it.

I guess the first job would be new fuel and piping then.

I do fancy running a straight 6 3.0 for a while ;D
Really annoying thing is because i am under 25 i cannot drive other cars with just third party insurance >:(
Not sure how i can add it to my policy
-
Heard of people going as named drivers on someone elses policy say a mum or dads, maybe a way round it.

Wondered about that, used to do that for my car. Now got my own policy...
However the senny will be a stand alone car. Parents won't use it, i will only drive it and when i do drive it, at best be once a month as a i prepare it.
damn insurance!
-
A car thats stood for 3 years is going to have some issues, aside from the bodywork problems. I guess it has no MOT either.

its SORN at the moment, i like the idea of 24v Senny.. but think it may be a bit to much. However might go take a look at it!

i like the idea of 24v Senny....
So do I. :(

Hi Tunnie,
a 1991 Senator should be elegible for classic car insurance. I'd phone someone like Footman James for a quote. If you are part of a recognised club too (Autobahn stormers perhaps??) you should get a discount on the premium and possibly unlimited miles. Could be worth looking into that route :)
Cheers Jim

classic insurance on cars is for pre 72 cars - different rules to bikes ;)

:-? Depends where you go as to what they class as 'classic insurance' but I've never heard of pre 72. You not confusing with historic/free road tax?
Before I lost the plot and sold Vx's finest ;) I had a ring round to obtain quotes for a Senator as a 2nd/classic car. Unfortunately I can't remember which company it was but I had a quote of aound £150.
Autobahnstormers insure their Lotus Carltons/Omega(A) for a relative pitance under classic car policies.

Yes, I was thinking of tax :-[
Classic insurance, don't you normally have limited mileage, and the car be a true classic icon?

Yes usually.

A Senator already is!!! When was the last time you parked up next/near/same carpark as one? ::)

LOL, I followed one in petrol station today - 24v I think (it had the twin, thin exhaust)
-
might have to investigate this classic insurance!!
i'd be laughing if i got a quote for £150 for the year!! Just £75 each between me and my m8 ;D ;D

I have a garage with the house in London, but its full of crap... however its a safe area. Also got a garage here...
Just did a quote, with me 4 years older (so 26) came out at £175.14
Thinking about ringing them tomorrow, asking about under 25 cover, and driving in Europe.
To be honest, if the car gets nicked.. and the don't payout cause it was not garaged.. i won't be too fused, only £100 for the car anyway! - Fact is i would be legal when driving....
-
As the thing is worthless (in insurance terms), worth checking TPFT

Already did that, i did a quote on direct line. £365 fully comp... so i though damn thats cheap. Clicked TPFT.. £395! :o :o ::) ::)
mijfife mentioned Footman James, they seam very cheap. But i need to ask about under 25 insurance & travel in Europe.
Actually i lied in my last post Hayes is not safe at all, someone got abducted from the station and beaten up, crashes always happening down my road, and down the bottom of the road MI5 raided it and gun shots heard, although it was never on the news? ::)
I watched with interest as black meggas pulled up and SWAT type guys got out but with NO markings on them saying Police or anything! ::) - I decided to walk on and ignor!

Any policy you get, I would check if it covers you abroad (due to your age) - obviously you will need a greencard whatever...

Already checked Europe for Direct Line, £30 per month extra for each month over seas, can take 3 months in total... not bad i thought.
As per green card do you mean the IDP?

Hi Tunnie,
I know of lads in the Imp Club as young as 17 that have insurance throught FJ. The best bet would be to phone them as the phone quotes are always cheaper than the internet quote. Remember to ask what difference being a member of a classic car club makes, it's usually much more than the cost of joining the club in the first place. I'd be surprised if a classic policy cost you any more than £150.
Many Classic companies take cars from at least 15years old and some even as young as 10! As for garaging, most policies ask that the car is garaged at the address overnight and you are not technically covered for damage between something like 10pm and 6am. If it's anything like my policy, this only applies if the car is parked within 1/4mile of the garage ;)
There are plenty of other Classic companies out there too, Airdian Flux, Norton, Peter Best, to name a few. I've got Practical Classics magazine here if you want a list of some of the others.
Cheers Jim

Excellent Jim, many thanks :y
Save me a few quid there, makes it all the more tempting for a 24v Senny :D
And at that price i can afford to insure it and be able to drive it before i go, as TheBoy mentioned to me the other day. It would be good to get the car running, and iron out any problems with it :y

Any Senator that has not moved in 3 years would need to be free to interest me!
Tunnie, Senator would be an interesting (and good) choice. But why not go for one with MOT at least?
They can be picked up for £200-£400
As for arches? Forget it. Finding the replacement arches is not easy and their quality is questionable. Not a recommended option.
Just find one with decent mechanics and sound chasis. :)

I will keep my eye out for them now i think, looking at photos of the engine bays they look very similar to that of the Omega. So i think i can find my way around!
Just out of interest, can the 3.0 24v be paper clip tested? - Also can it take standard Omega pads, i still have a set in the garage!

Tunnie try HIC for inssurance!! vauxhall specialists, also code reader hear for senny and further more my garage is full of spares for the 24v straight six!!!
and having driven them for umpteen years(got me first one in 95 and vever had another car till i got the TD I know a fair bit about them!!

Tunnie. Yes you can do the paperclip test, it has the Bosch Motronic 1.5 system. The connector is in the engine bay, passenger side by the bulkhead.
As for the pads, I am not sure which you have. The Senator has 286mm discs. Some Omegas use these, but most have 308mm.
Oh and one good thing is the autobox fluid is rather easier to change as you have a proper dipstick setup on the Senator! :)
Not mention the good old distributor (bearings on these can fail) and coil....
As you will be gathering, there are a few fans of the old girl on here! :D

308mm discs? On which car?
All 6 cylinder Omegas had 296 mm discs than all cars had them.
No Senator had a 286mm disc. 12v cars had a 280 mm disc then they had a 296 mm when the 24vv came in. These are the same discs as the Omega

Dad was just saying as i read this that the fastest police car he had was 3litre 24v Senny.
Had it at 165mph , obviously many many years ago and was a chipped car.
Unfortunatly some silly PC crashed it so they de chipped it and sold it on :-?
-
.....

What kind of chip? Police Senators as police Omegas were the same as Joe Public would buy. The biggest difference is the lack of toys in police cars which makes a considerable difference to their weight. eg who's removed seat from their Omega? They are bloody heavy. You remember on Top Gear years ago when they tested a V12 XJS against other exotics. It was P poor. Then they stripped out all of the luxury goodies and there was a marked difference.

It would appear some (though defo not all) forces do use different maps...

Sounds like good news!! - a TD megga would be the sensible option, however a 3.0 Straight 6 is very temping ;)
Loads of spares sound good too!
As i can see Dave lot of people here like them, they sound easier to work on too.
If anyone spots a senny at a good price, and has tax & mot drop me a PM. I'd be very interested!! :D

No idea - thing to remember is that this was not a marked car and was not part of a bulk purchase, an unmarked demonstrator for Strathclyde

I think after discussions here, it needs:
A) Be 3.0 24v version
B) decent mot & tax prefered (although mot is more important than tax)
C) Rear arches to be in good nick

I can personally confirm that speed. And it was fitted with a calibrated speedo.
Car I drove was a Police College driving school car circa 1991. Chipped and remapped and fitted with uprated springs, suspension and brakes all round by Vauxhall from new and, allegedly, different top end gearing.
To those familiar with the area, imagine driving something like this down through Glencoe and similar roads with only the rev limiter (and hazards then present) as your speed governor.... :y
ps - I have a rear box (twin letterbox style outlet) and both centre sections for a 24 valve senny in my garage. All brand new and unused.
