It's all in the name of National Security, so goodbye our previous Western Liberal Democracy of Liberty and Free Speech!! >:( >:( >:( >:(

Thankfully the RIPA (Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act) prevents access for all but the most serious offences, I'd be very surprised if they got used for anything but Terrorism cases

So, given that I run my own mail server, are my ISP going to have to sniff every SMTP connection, incoming and outgoing, and record the contents?
Good luck to them in filtering out the interesting stuff from the spam.
A mail account based offshore with secure access would scupper them somewhat. Still, I have often wondered when this government will finally understand how the internet works, and stop their pontless efforts to control it.

I am far from being a computer expert Kevin, but as I understand what I have researched 99% of the World's ISP's are based in California in the dear old USA. ::) ::) ::)
Therefore, who really has control of the Internet and e-mails, especially considering the US military had ownership of the ISP base up until the 1980s/90'?? :-? :-? :-?
Or am I talking out of complete ignorance? ::) ::) ::) I am very interested to know the truth from those who really know the IT setup. :D :D :D ;)

Like to see plod hack my PCs ;D. Not that they're all that secure. ::)
Pure Daily Mail, that article, IMHO. As if they'd go to the (considerable) time and effort to employ hackers instead of just battering the door down with their "special key" and taking what they want.

Whilst the root authorities for allocation of domain names and IP addresses are under US control due to the origins of the internet that's about as far as it goes.

Thanks Kevin! ;) ;)
So what you are saying Kevin is that although ISP's are under US control, 'they' (CIA. MI5 etc,) cannot use this to their advantage? :-?
:y :y

What we are saying is that ISP's are not under US control at all.....they can be anywhere.....those that control the registration of domain names etc (i.e. www.omegaowners.com) are mostly based in the US.

Right, thanks Mark! :y :y
But I read once that Russia was complaining that the ISP's being based in California was a threat to them. ::) ::) Was that just Politics? :-? :-?

More likely to be typical journalism.....i.e. people writing about things they dont know or understand!

For the record, those with OOF mail, thats not UK hosted, and thus not covered by this gay idea.
I know one of our mail platforms, that deals with a relatively small number of companies will need approx 1Tb to keep 12months worth of mail logs (and remember, mail logs are pretty useless as a counter terrorism measure). You may think 1Tb isn't that much, but remember it must be fault tolerant, fast, a backup infrastructure put in place, and a offsite retension policy put in place.
All in all, expect it to cost the ISP somewhere in the region of £20k per year per Tb of storage... ...and poor old us will have to cop the cost.
