Title: Vista - Purchase of?
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 13 January 2009, 23:21:32
Time for an upgrade in the next few weeks from XP Pro.

Never used Vista
Never even seen it in operation.

Of all the home and business variants available, which is the best.

or

Is it worth waiting for Windows 7?

TIA   :y

By the sounds of it Windows 7 is the next best thing, and the beta is available to download. I would stick with your XP meantime until service packs come out for Win 7. Maybe next year.

Top version is Vista Ultimate - also most pricy!!

Windows 7 seems to me to be a better op system (as a beta) & seems to be the op system that Vista should have been!

Get the feeling that Vista will be short lived - rather like the crappy Windows ME

would you go as far as installing windows 7 immediately instead of Vista SP1?

In answer to the original thread, I bought my sealed copy of vista ultimate - full retail off ebay for £120.  It would seem vendors are now slashing prices to move the stocks.

With the new user licence Microsoft has in place, buy the full retail of you can, as the cheaper OEM versions are tied to the computer you install them to the point that they get shirty if you install another graphics card or processor.  No such probs with the full commercial options.

For main day to day use, Vista.  Remember the Win7 beta expires every few months, so will need reinstall, and is probably unstable.  Win7 should only go on 2nd machines really.

Vista will be short lived due to the media's antiness towards it.

Be so careful buying MS software from Ebay - I frequently have to deal with people who have, and they won't activate...

I would get Vista personally, everyone attacks it but it is a brilliant OS (best I have used), very stable and for everyday home use it will be fine.  :y

I bought 2 genuine vista ultimates and have one on the lap top and one on the gaming pc, both work fantastic, worth the extra.

I know, i made sure that they were legitimate full retail copies.  I also get them to send or post a picture of the proof label, and that it comes from ireland.  I had a colleague that ordered a peice of software from the usa - got stung for customs charges, then it wouldn't activate as it turned out to be a student licence!

I've fallen for the demo disc with the crack cd before now, so now i'm very carefull.

A few retail copies seem to have COA visible from outside of packaging, and that means it could possibly have been activated already
