Post by: bighed on 15 January 2009, 19:56:36
Im going to tackle refurbishing the wheels on my senator.

Any tips, help on how to, and what to use ie sandpaper grades and types of primer paint and laquer would be great  :y

Get the tyres removed first......then see if any local outfits will blast them for you.

Fill and sand any imperfections and paint as per normal

Are they the two tone gold + another colour ones?

Not gold no. They are just normal alloy colour (or were)  :y

They've been 'refurbished' before then. The spokes should be a very pale gold colour and the outer rim should be silver.
Have a look in the gallery section of the Autobahnstormers, I'm sure you'll find some OE coloured rims there.

Like these ..... on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=200296867501&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=010)

 .......

Check what they use to blast then with though. I still have a set in the shed that a local firm f***ed 'refurbished' for me, and they'd used something far too sharp/abrasive. They need to be bead blasted with a softer media (is that a word? :-/) otherwise the surface will be rough as a badgers 4r$e!  :-?

Normal sand/grit blasting media will get embedded into the alloy which won't help matters.
Rmemeber many years ago mate of mine had the crank cases of his pride & joy Harris Magnum sand blasted. After he rebuilt it the abrasive came out of the casings into his oil and reground the crank while he was riding the bike.
Oh how we laughed when he told us all about it. ;D

I just used various grades of emry cloth (where the horrible clip on weights had encouraged corrosion behind them) and whatever wet 'n' dry I had. I had some very small abrasive 'mops' for inside the spokes, fortunately from work, as they were about £4 a piece :o . I used rattle cans from Halfords and a couple of cans of laquer to finish.

To make matters worse I worked with his Dad and informed him we had a beadblasting cabinet for cleaning the dies in the press shop at work where I did all my blasting foreigners. ;D

lol yeah andy media is the correct term.. it just pits the surface i think
(i was on about shot blasting or bead blasting some wheels)-we have both bead blasters and shot blasters
