Title: Noses firmly in the trough..
Post by: Nickbat on 16 January 2009, 12:02:49
"Remember the clampdown on MPs expenses which was promised after it emerged Derek Conway was paying his sons to work for him? Full transparency and an end to the John Lewis list? Well a year later, and on a busy newsday, Harriet Harman has announced the watering down almost all the restrictions."

Actually, on the same topic, I like this quote from http://devilskitchen.me.uk/2009/01/authors-note-i-am-not-devils-kitchen.html

"Let's make this clear; if you are furnishing your home with my money, then I demand to know how much is being spent on what. This is not a burdensome requirement; it is the basic f*cking minimum I am entitled to expect."

Quite.  >:( >:(

Same as usual; for some reason we think it's perfectly acceptable for government ministers to be allowed to make a decision on what affects their accountability directly.

IMO it should be an external organisation that decides this; not one allied to any political party - which makes the decisions in favour of the people paying the money i.e. the general public.

Does Harriet Harman not realise that it's obvious that they are doing this to hide dodgy dealings? Should the police rule not apply to ministers - "if you have nothing to hide, why are you denying us the right to check?"
