Post by: dispondent 1 on 07 January 2009, 03:48:57
as i am a relative new commer to the forum i dont know any one , it would be good if we had a white board that we could all type to for instant messaging so new members like myself could just say hi to other members and get it moving a bit quicker + have the crack with whatever is the current topic ? what ya reckon, :o

Chat type ideas have been dismissed in the past as they are believed to be likely to split the community here, ie one group sticking to the forum, one to chat.

split the community , what community ? the same names appear on the posts day after day, would it not be a good idear if the core members could talk realtime and the newer members could just join in? 3,30 this morning scruntie i think was on and 1/2 others, i was going to say morning! where would i have done that without sending a pm , we are all here for the same reason , cars , but after a while it clearly goes beyond  that and i think somewere to just say morning or break me that comment made me laugh wouldent be a bad idear :-?

When I was a new member I had the same idea, but now I know my way round the forum I agree with Jimbob and others.

Add MS Messenger to your profile, then  you have added options if you wish  a faster chat system.  Also Skype for a headset chat in some cases.  I have both plus YIM.

Set yourself an account up

I am happy to add anyone from the forum to any of my accounts.  All I ask is that when you send a request is that you mention your user name and OOF.  :y

Technical issues aside, its as Jimbob said - it would split the membership up.  So I think you have to do either 1 or the other, not both.  I would always fall down on the side of a forum format, rather than chatroom format, as people can join in all discussions, even if they were offline when it started.  It also leaves a lasting footprint as well.
