Title: Reg no on pics
Post by: Raymienets on 21 January 2009, 22:27:25
When folk show pics of their miggy why do they blank out their reg no. Just curious.

I'd always thought it was to avoid thieves who steal to order if they have access to DVLA records...

i.e. if you like the car, and can find out where it's registered, it's easier to nick that particular one.

Under "Suggestions" there is a good thread where many are explaining their reasons for this:

AS in ebay car ads some ownwers don't want to risk "cloning" ie some one could steal a car like yours apply for a log book, do a bank job etc.
Does'nt bother me personally as i can prove where me or the car were @ any given time but some err on the side of caution.

For the sake of getting access to possibly an A3 Printer and A3 card.  Do the printinting and then laminate ie.

"OOF"

If possible then just a single line as a border from each side of the weblink to frame it all.

Yeah, I could do that, only the web address is wrong.  :P

I'll look into it for newent, If I can get a load done it would be good to have group shots all with the same showplates!

Sure that someone could design one and post a link to download / email and print. Not sure about an A3 printer, might have to find someone who would do it for me. It would be nice to have the logo on as well?   :)

Anyone know the size of a number plate.  Maybe A3 not tall enouogh.

If it needs to be A2 then the likes of office worl might be worth going to.  Design an A2/3 layout with 3 number plates in landscape.  Laminate and guilotine into 3 peices.

Yeah - thinking that too. I suppose TB would be OK with it? Perhaps we should have a design competition and invite entries in the gallery thread.... oh hang on, I remember what the calendar thread turned into.  ::)

http://www.myshowplates.com - good for seeing what they look like. (ish, it won't let me stick a logo in!)

i hide mine so im not a victim of vehicle identity theft. i manage to accumulate enough speeding tickets without someone else helping me along by nicking my reg no

i was also a victim of identity theft (before it became fashionable hehe) and its a real pain in the butt so its just not worth risking it

i had some showplates made for photos but sadly the front bumper on most cars is bowed so wont stick on with adhesive alone, needs drilling, which i am yet to do.

Laminated card would bend though, even blue tack would stick it, just for show.. :y

I have the facility to print these out on a large format Epson if need be. Only Photo Paper though, Not Card. And I don't have a laminator either.

Might just wanna clone a car to avoid paying tax/MOT/Insurance...

Clone a plate of a car on ebay thats advertised as haveing 12 months MOT 6 months tax...when it sells most likely the first thing the new owner will do is insure it for a year...so drive your similar looking Omega about and if the police see it then its covered according to their computer and any fines go to the owner...probably get away with it on each car for a while...

Those plates are definitely a good idea - nice one!

We'll have to look into the cost of getting them printed and laminated - next time I'm in town i'll pop into the printers and ask.

I'd say no need to get them printed, I can do that for free! its just the laminating part that needs looking into

If someone has an A4 Laminator (cheap as chips anyway) all we need to find is some large pouches big enough to fit round the number plate

Standard Oblong plate - 524mm x 112mm

Found this http://www.laminatingpouches.co.uk/pouches.html

Probably need to get some A2's and cut them down for each one!

Title: Re: Reg no on pics
Post by: jjleonard on 22 January 2009, 11:02:37
I'll happily do this - I can pick up a cheapo laminator and a pack of these pouches and then give it a go. It'll have to wait until payday next week though.

 :y

Richard - If I PM you my address, will you print a couple of those plates off and post them to me? I'll get the laminator and the pouches, give it a go, then stick the results up here.

Hmm... dunno about the black one. It would probably suit black cars better...

I personally prefer the white and yellow.

Sticking to the "original" topic.

I personally blank my plates on sites and forums as I know alot of people save the images to their drives and sometimes post them on other sites without my permission, ie. ebay. some git used a pic of my car from this forum to advertise his irmscher spoiler. I quickly pulled him up on it and it was removed.

A number plate is like a bank account number, you may just think all they can get is your name, wrong, they can get so much more.. more than you know about yourself.
