This weekend, I will have to go up north, to Rossendale. It's about 230 miles from Basingstoke so I decided to go by train. This was very surprising, because I was quoted ca £90 for a single ticket from National Rail (online)!! I would have to pay no more than £35 for a petrol to get there. Ticket prices are bit insane, especially that there are 3 interchanges and it takes 4.5h to get t here.
Unfortunately it's not that easy so I decided to try and find another option.
I tried here: http://www.transportdirect.info/web2/ and found that a coach would cost me only £32 but I have to consider extra 4h. Extra 4 hours for £58 - I think it's worth the hassle.
Anyway, there is a small problem. I know that I will have to take a bus to get from Manchester to Rawtenstall (near to Rossendale), but there is no info how much I will have to pay for this ticket. The only thing I have found is that there's £1.7 for 3+ bus stops, but I am not sure if its more than 3 or every three....
I would really appreciate any help with getting this bloody fare from Manchester (Central Coach Station)to Rawtenstall.
Thanks in advance.

Depending on distance and how long you will be there. Then would it not be easier to get some kind of day saver that allows you to travel on any bus in that region.
Try and fing details for thier transport interchange and give them a ring.

As far as I know there's no mainline train station in Rawtenstall anymore, apart fom at week ends when the East Lancs Railway runs the steam trains from Bury to Rawtenstall via Ramsbottom.
I don't normally do public transport but the only way I can think of is getting the Metrolink from Manchester Victoria through to Bury, then a bus to Rawtenstall.
I think there might be buses from Manchester to Accrington from where you'll be able to bus it to Rawtenstall.
You do know you pronounce it Rotten-stall?? ;) :y
edit; having re-read your question .... I've answered a different question than you've asked!
-
I go to north manchester regularly - not worth messing around with buses and trains at that price difference - the fuel cost is not that bad if you drive gingerly to maximise mpg - damn site quicker than public transport and more reliable.
-
Take a train - they are running

You can even have a pint of a real ale in The Trackside (http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/60/6070/Trackside/Bury) at Bury station.

I do my journey - 210 miles in 3 hours - Rawtenstall will be 3.5 hours say 230 miles. 15 gallons for 460 miles??

break it... Too much messing about for me, I'd drive! ::) ::) ;) ;) :y :y

Thanks guys.
Small explanation
I’m going there to collect new car (Omega :D ) so it’s not possible to go by car. Hopefully I will return in one :D
£90 is for a one way ticket. Return would cost 150 or 160. To go by car, I need 32l one way (65 both) *0.839 = £26.8 or £53 both ways. Rail ticket is just too expensive so not being a student or a manager on a company trip, it’s not worth to go by train.
Train only goes to Accrington so on top of £90 I have to get to Rosendalle by bus. I can get to Manchester by coach and then to Rawtenstall by local bus and this is the bus I’m after. It’s 18 miles and it might be £5-10 or it can be £20-30

If Andy is willing to be a Taxi, and he knows where he's going to be going and seems happy enough, then I'd take him up on the offer! A couple of beer tokens and you've got a comfy ride to collect the car and another good set of eyes to look it over with you :y :y :y :y :y

It will cost me £20.50 to get from Basingstoke to Manchester. Then I have to go to Rossendale. I am more than happy to use Andy's Taxi ;) and his help but I think it's too far from him to get me from Manchester to Rossendale.

ok. hows this. i can pick you up from any manchester station (probably piccadily) and run you up to andy who could then take you on to rottensall. upto you mate but the offer is there. piccadily only 20mins from me.

Stagecoach used to run a service from Chorlton St. bus station in Manchester to Burnley which went through Rawtenstall. It was quite cheap and frequent too, 1 or maybe even 2 buses an hour. Don't know if there is still a service but prob worth a look as the bus station is only a couple of mins walk from Picadilly. (Was about 6 years ago when I last went on it though!)

I have found and bought two tickets.
1. Basingstoke - London Victoria for £11
2. London Victoria - Manchester for £10.5
I will have to get to Rosendale, but it will cost me only £3.6
TOTAL: £25
Much, much cheaper comparing to Rail (£89).
Kris - thanks for your offer, but I have already spoken with Andy and he'll pick me up. Thanks anyway :)

Ok. Car is collected and in our carpark now. Think it was worth this 230 miles trip. Got me back home safely :)
Big, big, big thanks to Andy, helped me a LOT. Without him I would struggle to get there. I owe him a big favour! (not a beer, a whole brewery :) )
Best place to compare travel costs and to find the cheapest way of getting from A to B go here http://www.transportdirect.info/web2/
Thanks Andy once again.

......
Thanks Andy once again.
You're welcome.
You now need to find & fit A N Other power steering pump! :y :y :y
-
Strange thing is that it only plays up when on idle (500 revs). When revved to 600-700 it's working fine. We've both noticed that it only makes this noise when moving steering wheel, on idle is quiet.
Is it not due to low revs or blocked overflow valve?
Leaking covers need attention as well, same as breathers. Apart from that it's more or less ok and only needs cosmetics.
Petrol consumption reached 31.7MPG on the way home. Not great, but not bad.
-
Glad you got your little mission sorted. Well done both and good luck with power steering pump :y

One more thing. I have cleaned oil cap yesterday as it was covered in mayo. Did more than 100 miles, but unfortunately didn't check it again. Today I went to the shopping mall and on return found mayo again. Coolant is at the same level as yesterday, there's no oil in it, but hoses are bit hard. I have opened the cap, closed it and let the engine run, but I didn't notice any pressure build up. No air bubbles when revved.
Oil is dark but clean and its only cap and cap pipe covered in mayo.
Is it normal for a mayo to buid up that quick in this area or should I be concerned about the head gasket? Apart from that there's nothing suggesting head gasket failure.
-
I would do an oil change and check the breathers. Could be that a bit of moisture has built up in the oil due to short trips or blocked breathers.
Obviously monitor the coolant level and condition.
