My understanding is, you cannot drive a car without tax?
However the problem:
Picking up a car on Saturday, it has a new MOT but no tax.
Its already Thursday, I won't be able to get a insurance certificate by Saturday.
I know you need a MOT + insurance to get tax, problem is i won't have any in time to drive the car. Even if i get one of those 1 day insurance things, cause they won't let you buy tax iic.
Any ideas?
Can i drive the car saying insurance is on the way so i can buy tax? :-/
Has anyone has experiance with on-line tax?
Thanks in advance! :y

You would be able to tax online, which would help
but driving without displaying a valid tax disk is an offence,
At least the computers would know you were taxed so be ok.
Is the current owner insured? if so why not ask them to buy the tax (with you paying)

yep either get them to buy it at your cost or take the risk..........driving without tax, however good your intentions, is an offence :(
-
Aye
Tis annoying, especially as once you can legally buy the tax, you will be buying it from the start of Jan anyway,
If it was me, and left with no option, I would tax online, therefore settling for the lower problem of not displaying a disc, I would also carry the receipt proving you have just bought it, would make the argument a lot easier in the event of being stopped, presuming the mot is a computerised one, if not you cant tax online anyway (not sure if old style still even exist thinking about it)
-
Tunnie, I would ask them to purchase the tax on your behalf. This is the best solution and would ensure you were driving legally.
As it is, the car would need to be taxed or declared SORN by the 14th or there will be an automatic £80 fine sent to the registered keeper as of that date.
Buying the tax online is much more awkward if you have just purchased the car as all the information on the system is in the previous keepers name, so a new disc would automatically be sent to them.
-
Yes, ask current owner to tax. Only time you can drive it without tax is with trade plates (or possibly to/from prearranged MOT).
Cannot do online, as not in your name yet.
If owner has already surrended insurance, you may have a problem...
-
Good point guys.. didn't think about that one! :y
I'll ring the seller...
-
Tunnie, if you phone your insurance company and explain the situation they should be able to send out an emergency cover note by first class post which you should receive the next day. I did this recently myself although for a slightly different reason.

Cheers for the replys guys :y
Just rang the seller, and asked him to put 12 months tax on. No problem he said, i got a motor trade certificate to use so no problem.

What if the car is being towed? Is it still a motor vehicle and thus needs a tax disc, or is it a trailer and covered by the disc on the towing vehicle?

A car towed on either a rope or a bar is still a car and subject to all the insurance, driving licence etc etc as if it wasn't. Only way out is if its on an A frame or towing dolly with front (rear) wheels off the floor and therefore does not require a driver in it. Then its a trailer, but watch the towing weights etc for the towed and towing vehicle combination...
