Reasonably pleased - still haven't found web space or extra emails, the BT Yahoo stuff is all resource hungry.

Killed it all off with Hijackthis ;D

MaxDSL, not quite good enough line for 2Mb then, so Max is probably the best product.

It will disconnect a few times over next few days as it trys to work out your line characteristics...

There are a few good web/email hosts - the best value seems to be stateside...

Or host your own now you have always on internet ;) - though your dynamic address may cause a problem.  If you want to try this, check out Zoneedit, and their Dynamic DNS service - you can host your existing DNS there, and point your A and MX records to your own server on your DSL line. And its free. ;)

I've just spent 5hrs on & off trying to get on the net, turns out I shouldn't leave my router on all the time...

Not sure, eventually I spoke to customer services who tested my line, all good & all lights lit correctly on router, apparently if it isn't powered down every now & then it looses connection with PC?

Hmmm, you need to reboot the router every so often?  :-?

I'd go and buy a decent one then!

Wireless or wired?

Martin

If you have Adsl Max this is the info I was given :

What do I need to know?
----------------------
During the first 10 days of Max your phone line will be automatically measured to establish what speed it can support, and in particular at what speed the line will remain stable. You will see your modem's 'sync' speed vary, and commonly may experience disconnections and some instability of your connection. During the testing period you should frequently make new connections to the Internet so these tests can take place. It's a good idea to power off/on your modem or router when doing this - this will force your equipment to reconnect. After 10 days you should see your speeds stabilise at the fastest speed your line can support.

It's wired to my desktop, just setting up phone to use wireless, of course customer services say you can only use the one supplied....

There is a disconnect button - I'll try that first - just pause my naughties first!

As mentioned in the previous post, you do need to give ADSLmax 10 days for the line to complete it's training period. During this time the line speed will vary and it will then lock at the highest stable speed.

If you turn your router off or disconnect within the first 10 days, the training period will start over again.

Martin, do not power off router during training period - it will affect the results, hence final speed.

And it reconnected faster - been stuck at just under 2.5 today but feels like a modem in performance - very odd - is this part of it bedding in or is this what contention feels like?

Once the training is complete try messing with MTU and RWIN - but do not disconnect or reset router!

Just let it settle for the 10 days.

The fact that it is currently syncing at 2Mb suggests your line is quite poor. You a long way from exchange?

and 2M is a damn site better than 128k, and cheaper too ;)

My service provider told me to switch my modem off - so it forces it to retrain at the best speed it can?
