VERY bad idea...

Alot can go wrong with a car in the space of 12 months...

I'm also still not convinced the 3 year gap from buying a brand new car to its first MOT is also a good idea...  Given how some people *dont* look after there car, regardless of age...

I've seen quite a few 08/58 registered cars looking like deathtraps...

I didn't hear anything about this either.  The telegraph says the plans we 'high profile'?!

Good job they were shelved...

It will no doubt get pushed through in the end to bring us "in line" with Europe.

I agree it's a very bad idea due to the number of idiots who will drive a car with zero maintenance until it falls apart on them. 2 years is a long time to go without checking tyres, brake pads, etc.

However, the annual cost of an MOT is now 50 quid plus. It's starting to get pricey IMHO. Maybe there'd be a case for a reduced test every other year?

Then again, most of the cost is the labour involved in trying to dial into the DVLA computer using a 486 running Windows 95 and a cr@ppy 56K modem. ::)

MOT ....came out in 1960.......before that ....no MOT......so cars running around with canvas hanging out of their tyres.......so there were many death traps on the road before 1960.

Also.......first MOT in 1960 .....was for cars of 10 years or older only. :y

i would think if they seriously plan to do 2 year intervals, they'll have the sense to make an MOT pass on very very strict terms!

Rather than extend MoT time I think there should be more attention to the thousands of cars that do not have an MoT that are on the roads, and consequently without Tax and Insurance. :( Surly there must be a way of monitoring and policing this, not by plod but by some other means. :question and taking effective action. :)
