Post by: JueV6 on 29 January 2009, 22:15:00
SWMNBO has banned me from Glenfiddich and refuses me JD, so it looks like the PORT takes the lead.

it IS VERY MORE-ISH, she now HIDDEN the 2nd bottle.

Port is somewhat on the posh side old chap, a cheeky fortified wine which gives one gout, a much respected & painful ailment amongst the malaria sufferers in the upper classes...Chin chin. 8-)

Real ale is favourite, followed by gin and tonic and a good mal, maybe a port or two, some rum.........

If going out in town though its Guiness followeed by lager as most large city pubs cant keep good beer and Tetley and John Smiths does not count as beer anyway!  ;D

Although I'd class myself as a lager man, I do enjoy a good beer festival and like the true real ales, as enjoyed by bearded blokes with sandles.  Not found a proper beer that I can buy at a supermarket that I particularly like.

As MDTM says, beers in pubs tend to be crap.  I often drink bottled beer in pubs - particularly chains - as even lager is rather awful.

As I've got older, I struggle with the volume - particularly gassy lagers - so tend to head over to shorts after 4 or 5 lagers.  If I'm out, this will often be vodka, as I still have nightmares about my last voyage with Captain Morgan.

Occasionally a nice malt as a nightcap to seal the evening.

I work with a guy who really does like a drop of Port, and he has got me back on it after a break of many, many years.  A drop of Port can finish off an evening, esp with some cheese and biccies - how very civilised :y

It's not quite the same out of bottles, IMHO, although Sainsury's near us have a good selection.

Fortunately I have triple fff brewery 10 minutes walk away and they will sell it bright or sedimented in any container you care to present them with.  ;)

There's me wondering what to do with all those 20 litre GM oil cans. ::)

Town pubs are rubbish - beer and clientele alike, I find. Nice little village pubs are very good around us and I can't remember when I last had a disappointing pint. Problem is, someone's got to drive. If it's me it's a very bad idea, and the memory of the night Mrs. KW drove my Westfield into a ditch on the way back from the pub still troubles me...  ::) :-X

Yes, a bottle of port ended up next to my chair in the lounge after having some friends round a few weeks back. It's empty now.  ::)

Thats the trouble Kevin, its either the pubs local, or driving.  I live in a small market town, so haven't really been taken over by the big chain pubs, and most still have a friendly atmosphere.  We still have a lot of pubs for such a small town.

When I go out with work, its always Milton Keynes, Luton, St Albans.  All crap, and makes me appreciate what I have on my doorstep.

Was out with my son the other day and we had a few hours to burn so went into a local spit and sawdust bar thats also a micro brewery.  Good mix of guest ales from various brewers up and down the country, as well as the local stuff.

Started on a 3.6 ABV then ended up on, I think, local brew of 5.8 ABV.  Enjoyable afternoon and no continual burping from excess injected CO2... :D

Got to be Powers Irish whisky, you can't really get it over here so trips to Kildare to see the family see me stocked up.

Copped for a bottle of the local potcheen last time, jeesus I swear you could run your car off the stuff.

I guess I'm in the same lucky situation at Alton. One "chain" pub opened a few years ago and for the first 6 months made a real effort to have decent beer. As soon as they realised they were drawing in the the mouth-breathing, Saxo-driving chavs, and that they would drink any old sh1te, that went out of the window - but at least it leaves the decent pubs free for those who appreciate them. ;)

On a hot day .. ice cold Jellybean  :)  Pernod, bacardi, gin and vodka, double shots, in a two pint jug, handful of ice cubes, bit of blackcurrant cordial and top up with lemonade.  Great stuff --- drink it like lemonade and the brain doesn't get fuzzy at all ---- only problem is that when you get up for a pee you discover the legs don't work !!!!!! :D

Favourite?

No contest!

Innis & Gunn. EBrewed in Edinburgh. Very 'different' flavour and at 7.3% it kicks you in the tail and no mistake.

Absolute heaven!!

Other than that any real beer although I'm partial to McEwan's Champion.

(Actually, I do drink Stella too, but it's only any good from a glass!!)
