Title: Senator Fuel Consumption Acuarcy
Post by: tunnie on 13 January 2007, 19:18:57
The trip comp in the dash read 31 after the run from Swindon to Ardley, i reset it as i was leaving Swindon. Its dropped to 27mpg now, however the main gallon reading on the dash has gone from 4 done to -- blinking, so i have used 4 gallons of fuel...

And its 51 miles to Swindon from me!! I'd say i have done around 60/65 miles it in though, going via other places. At max say 70 miles.

I was giving it stick all the way, but that average reading does not seam right.

4 gallons for 65 miles of driving!? thats not 30 ish mpg!

I would suspect the fuel computer is ok 27-33mpg is about right.

You know the only truly accurate way of testing though...

Fill up completely.
Reset trip computer and counter.

Drive car for a while (say 200 miles)

Refill to brim again.
Do calculation based on how much fuel was required to refill and how many miles were covered.
Now you will know how accurate gauges are. :)

ps. 4.55 litres = 1 gallon. ;)

I did not realise there were 2 little buttons either side of the dash, switched it to kph (use full for Europe) and it changed to litres instead of gallons!

If the Senator gets more than 30mpg at a constant 80, then my Omega's future is looking bleak  :-/

MID can be set to metric units, but afaik, only via tech2.  Climate can be set to F instead of C as well on Omega incidentally, again, Tech2.

There is a tech1 loom in the engine bay of the Senator, might invest in one of those code readers.

James, if you happen to browse this thread did you buy that code reader? - Might try it out on the Senator, for £30 odd what ever it is, might be worth investing in one for my trip.

I believe more stuff can be flashed out on senny, not just engine.  I doubt any cheap code reader will read Senator - it will be either an expensive generic code reader, or a tech1.

I'm sure your thrifty Omega will be safe  ;)  PS What MPG do you expect at 140 on the Autobahn  ;D

Who cares I will be doing 140 mph totally legal!  :D

Although tbh i bet the Senator will do better mpg at 140 than my Omega  ;)

Trip is usually very accurate but!!!! you have to reset the average speed as well as the consumption to get a true  reading!!

Going to take a print out of fault codes when i go i think.

Btw is the fuel comp / range bit on the Senator meant to be illuminated at night? - Does not look like it  :-/

I don't think your Omega can reach 140 - tops out at 137!  Senator still going strong.............................

Hmm should have said replacement is a bit tricky!! its a capless bulb in a tiny hole under a white cover on the side of the unit!! usually get the blown one out with a pair of very small needle nosed pliers and push new one in with a finger!!

Bulb an easy order or is it the usual Vx week to wait?

I think your 2.2 will be safe Tunnie!  ;)

When i was driving it and gave it some welly going uphill round pipers way.....i glanced at the fuel comp and it said 30ish mpg.....hmmm 3.0L i dont think so......i can believe you used 4 gallons.....15-20 mpg is nearer the mark i would say  ;)

I think Tunnie mentioned he can change from MPH to KPH by pressing a button.....
Also on facelift omegas its possible to change the temp setting on the climate from C to F by pressing the temp button and holding for a while....quick press just turns the passenger side off/on

A wound up early Carlton 2.0 would get there eventually the H/C 2.0 was quite a good engine

Tunnie,

If I was really kind to my last Senator I could quite easily get high thirties MPG!!

(Granted it never saw that much, it was usually more around the 28ish mark, but that's still a damned sight better than the MV6!!)

In 3,000 miles in a week me and mark averaged just under 30mpg.

Believe me, we weren't pootling about at 55mph either ;)

Before that I could also coax 35mpg out of it on a run driving sensibly....that rarely happened though!  ;D

My V6 omega is overall better on fuel than my previous 2.0

Does this mean I'll have to find another decent Senator sooner rather than later before you all realise how much better a car the Senator is than the Omega ever will aspire to, and buy 'em all up?  ;)

you have NO idea how much  i regret the fact that there was never a production model estate sennie.....

if it were up to me....   my driveway would be full of senators....    and so would the road outside, and the car sales/service place over the road...

these threads serve to make me very very thoughtful... tempted to go out and buy one and risk the wrath of she who must be obeyed.....  but in all seriousness... I'm already keeping 3 cars taxed tested and insured....  and one of those is for a 17 yr old learner......  OUCH.
thank god it's only a little 1100 Pug 106...........

the line "dad can i borrow your car" has never been uttered in this house, nor will it be.....   EVER !!!

they all know this full bloody well !

for the record, all my Senators managed well over 30mpg "on a run"

even the 3.6 jobs ......   cruising at 85/90 with a full load of  kids, and luggage,  typically did about 35 mpg or so......

.

scarily, My Sintra has managed 35 mpg as well/.....   for some reason, it seems to cruise at 95 doing 34-36 MPG, but if you drop to 85 or so , the fuel consumption gets WORSE...   only around 29-29

weird huh?

That sounds good, I wonder if with this "Green Government" you could get off with a speeding ticket because the car is obviously much more "environmentally friendly" at 95 than at 70. ;D ;D ;D

I know what your mean, when I finish Uni and my travelling i am seriously thinking about keeping it as a second car. Because i will be living with my parents i will be able to afford it. Plus when i am 25 i should be able to get some nice cheap classic car insurance.
