Just been looking at a 1998 Astra G, 1.6 8V
symptoms are cutting out when hot, will restart when cool.
Jumping / misfiring type feeling once warm.
No fault codes, dealer 'given up', but did replace EGR
car looks reasonably services, air filter was immaculate, oil reasonable
coolant - old blue type but ok.
Was a LOT of mayo on the filler cap, but car has only done short recently.
Car only has 40000 on the clock, original owner from new.
My engine diags (live data) all looked ok, with the exception of 2 and 4 pots showing a knock value of 2 when cool, but all 4 showing 5-7ish when warm.
There is also a bubbling / gurgling type noise from where the heater pipes come through the bulkhead type noise (when revved)
Any ideas?
Ive sent them away to get a decent tank of petrol (v-power) was down to 1/8 a tank of Sainsburys, and to go for a longish drive, with some high rev driving, and see where it goes from there.

Mum had an astra g with similar prob on a 99 plate. turns out was the ecu and they replaced it under warranty. the first thing the mechanic looked at was ecu number then walked back in ordered new one.
It seams around 99 they had a dodgy batch, mum's car was 4 years old and out of warranty, but because it was such a low mileage vauxhall replaced it for free.
I found out after there was no trigger for the coil on 2 and 4 coming from the ecu, althought it was receiving the signal ok, sorry if I have not remembered this all correctly it was a few years back now.
HTH

Hmmm having re read your post, I think I may be barking up the wrong tree, sorry.

Cheers, got the TIS details for that one, looks a possible!
Edit Field remedy 1386 for reference.
FYI replacement of those was extended to 6 years

I had a similar thing on a friends car, which turnrd out to be the headgasket.
Nice easy job on one of these.
-
they are prone to head gaskets them 8v 1.6s tried cleaning the MAF ive had to replace the MAF on the astra as it kept cutting out and occasionally the eml would light up but not always

the wife has a 2000 1.8 with similar problems. just cuts out for no reason. starts up again quite easily but then cuts out again. happens quite randomly. not done it for a while now tho.

Needs live data reading and some ignition coil test

This is the older engine, not cpp by the way.

I know, it has a DIS pack....

ok, Cheers, be next week before I get the results from some decent petrol.
Hoping that helps, only obvious (to me) thing in live data was the knock values, guessing they shouldnt normally be above 0?
Is there anything but petrol that would cause that?

will tech 2 work on astra g. what can it do.

When you get sorted yours out ...... I can bring one round with another 8 valves and you can try to get rid of the EML on that if you like! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Over a week now....
And it is still driving fine!
Not seen it myself since.
A month in 2 garages, couldnt fix it.
Buggerlugs here, 5 mins with the diag port, and sorted!
All down to poor petrol!
It's bloody criminal!

......

Same here! Shhh! Looks like I bought & changed a coil pack for nothing as the EML went out by its self. It seems like the 'Redex' has worked ..... :-/ :-/
