Title: Speed cameras
Post by: Entwood on 03 February 2009, 22:54:49
Apparently it is possible that ALL speed cameras in the UK are illegal ... what the implications are I haven't a clue ....

Simply will not happen, much as many would like it to......  Ongoing tale, often retold....

Too much cash in the coffers already spent...   :(

My thought intially as well .. but if it's reached appeal level the original presiding judge must have thought the arguments "had merit" or the appeal would not be allowed  ???  :(

And someone is paying for a Barrister to present the case, said barrister must also think the same ?? (Although I suppose a Brief is a Brief and the money is the same whatever your private thoughts are ..  :(  )

I would be as surprised as a surprised thing if this actually came to pass.....

Cue search engine for forces who use the LTi 20/20    ;D

I think they would introduce retrospective legislation if they had to,and then it would take someone with very deep pockets to go all the way to Strasbourg to try to get a different ruling.
the things are just to much of a cash cow for them to let go.
A good example is the camera at the bottom of the M11,it has put over a million into the coffers since installation and despite hard evidence that accidents at the site have increased since then, there are no plans (afaik) to remove it. >:(

I have no doubt at all that some, if not many, speed cameras are not accurate (remember the case just over a year ago when this old boy managed to get his conviction overturned at court by proving the camera faulty) and neither do I think that many are there for safety reasons alone as the revenue generated is imense, however, in all honesty, how many of us if caught by one could genuinely say, no, I was not going over the speed limit? The points around speed only being one aspect of "safe" driving I fully agree with but cameras are only there to  deal with the speed you are travelling at. The real debate is how to improve road safety and, yes , travelling too fast for the conditions is a big part of that, but so are other issues like driving without lights/ defective brakes or without due care and attention etc. But these are all factors that can only really be improved and dealt with by having more traffic police on the roads, and that is obviously more expensive than static cameras, so , whilst they continue to rake in the money I dont expect to see them go anytime soon!!

I used to know a Policeman who when setting up his speed traps put the rubber pipes further apart than the manual said to under read slightly.

He said he did it to give leeway before prosecution or bollocking
